Who it's for
Travelers from countries without visa-free access to the European Union who are visiting Austria for a short stay. If your trip covers several Schengen countries, you apply through the country where you will spend the most time, or the first one you enter when the stays are equal.
Permitted activities
Tourism, business and transit. Working and living in Austria are not permitted. Tourism, business and private visits use the same visa but call for different supporting evidence, so a business file needs an invitation from the host company.
How it is issued
This is an embassy visa. It is a sticker placed in your passport, and it requires an appointment at a consulate or visa center to give biometric data. The government fee is paid at that appointment, and a visa service center may charge its own fee on top.
Biometrics
Fingerprints given for a Schengen visa in the past few years can be retrieved from the Visa Information System, so a repeat applicant may not need a new appointment. First-time applicants must attend in person, and children under twelve are exempt from fingerprinting.
Good to know
Every traveler needs their own application and their own sticker, infants included, and no Schengen consulate processes a shared family application. Airside transit needs a different visa type, which this product does not cover. Consulates set their own appointment backlogs, so book early.

  • I didn't get my results of traveling to Austria until less than a week before my trip. It told me I had to quarantine for 10 days when I was only going to be there for 7 for a ski trip. The results were very vague and inconsistent with the covid rules on the Austrian website. Needless to say, I had to cancel my trip that had been rescheduled twice over the past two years due to covid. I am out $2000 because of the last minute notice and inconsistent answers. I want my money back!

  • Thank you for giving me the chance to give my honest opinion about my request for Pre-Travel Clearance. What happened is a clear evidence of maximum rating I marked for the services. It didn’t pass 24 hours from the time when I started to apply for until I got the approval. Communication with ivisa team was at any hour within the 24 hours making so the process very efficient. Thank you ivisa team!

Austria visa FAQs

Quick answers to the most common questions about the Austria Schengen Visa.

Still have questions?

Our visa experts are available 24/7 on chat, email, and WhatsApp.

Do I need an Austria Schengen Visa?

If your nationality requires a visa to enter Austria and is not on the visa-free list, you’ll need a Schengen Visa to enter Austria and all other Schengen member states for tourism or business.

Can I apply for an Austria Schengen Visa online?

While you can start the process and fill out the application form online through iVisa, the Schengen rules require you to attend an in-person appointment for biometric collection (fingerprints and photo) and to submit your physical documents at a consulate or visa center.

How will I receive the Austria Schengen Visa?

After the Austrian authorities process your application, you will receive your passport back with the visa sticker attached, ready for your trip. You can also find a copy of your Schengen Visa confirmation in your iVisa dashboard if applied through us.

How long can I stay in Austria?

The standard short-stay visa (Type C) allows you to stay for a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day period in the Schengen Area. This applies to the entire Schengen Zone, not just Austria. If you have a multiple-entry visa, you must still adhere to the 90/180-day rule.

Can I extend my stay in Austria?

Schengen Visa stay extensions are rarely granted. You can generally only extend your visa in cases of force majeure (e.g., natural disasters or flight cancellations), humanitarian reasons, or serious personal reasons that prevent you from leaving. You must apply at the local Foreigners' Authority before your visa expires.

What is the processing time of an Austria Schengen Visa?

The standard processing time is 15 calendar days from the moment your application reaches the Austrian government. However, it can take up to 45 days during peak seasons or if additional document verification is required. We recommend applying at least 2 months before your trip.

Do children/minors need an Austria Schengen Visa?

Yes. Every traveler, including infants and minors, requires their own visa. For minors, the application must be signed by both parents/legal guardians, and a birth certificate must be provided along with a notarized travel consent form if the child is traveling alone or with only one parent. You can use iVisa’s "Add another person" feature to easily manage applications for the whole family in one session, saving time and effort.

What is the difference between a Schengen Visa and ETIAS?

The Schengen Visa is for travelers who are not visa-exempt. The ETIAS (launching late 2026) is a digital travel authorization for citizens of visa-exempt countries (like the US, UK, and Canada). If you currently need a visa to enter Austria, you will continue to need a Schengen Visa.
