Iceland’s visa policy is based on its membership in the Schengen Area, even though Iceland is not an EU member. For short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, Iceland follows the common Schengen rules. Citizens of the EU/EEA and Switzerland can enter freely, while nationals of many visa-exempt countries (such as the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and Japan) may travel without a visa for tourism or business. Travellers from countries that are not visa-exempt must apply for a Schengen short-stay visa (Type C in advance, which also allows travel to other Schengen states.
In the future, visa-exempt travellers will also need an ETIAS travel authorisation once the system becomes operational, as Iceland participates fully in Schengen systems.
For longer stays over 90 days, Iceland uses national visas and residence permits, which are separate from Schengen visas. These cover purposes such as work, study, and family reunification and are generally more limited in scope than in larger EU countries, reflecting Iceland’s small size. While EU/EEA citizens still benefit from favourable entry and residence rights under EEA rules, third-country nationals must apply for the appropriate Icelandic permit before or after arrival, depending on their nationality and purpose of stay.
Applying for a visa on your own can be confusing and time-consuming. iVisa simplifies the process, reduces errors, and gives you peace of mind
