Madagascar visa policy

Madagascar requires visas for nearly all foreign nationals, except for a handful of countries like Mauritius and Seychelles. The most accessible option for short-term stays is the Madagascar eVisa, which is available online through the official government portal or via trusted platforms like iVisa.

You can choose from 15, 30, or 60-day single-entry visas. All must be used within 90 days of issuance. The eVisa is strictly for tourism, family visits, or attending short business meetings – you cannot work, volunteer, or study using this visa.

Visitors who prefer not to apply in advance may still get a visa on arrival at Ivato International Airport (Antananarivo) or other major entry points. However, travelers report long wait times, limited staff, and occasional payment issues. That’s why the eVisa is strongly recommended for a smoother arrival process.

If you plan to arrive as a crew member by cruise ship or private yacht, you must apply through a separate system involving the port authority and local immigration agents. These visas are not part of the eVisa scheme and must be handled locally.

For longer stays, work, or residency, you’ll need to secure a long-stay visa or “Transformable Visa” from a Malagasy embassy before you travel. After arrival, you must convert this into a residence permit with the Ministry of the Interior within 15 days.

Extensions for short-stay visas may be granted in Madagascar, but only once. Overstays incur daily fines (often between MGA 100,000–150,000) and may result in deportation or future bans.

Entry rules may also require a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate if you're arriving from a risk country or transiting through one for more than 12 hours. Health checks and accommodation confirmation are also common at the airport.

FAQs

The eVisa is valid for 90 days from the date of issuance, but your stay duration depends on which option you select:

  • 15 days
  • 30 days
  • 60 days

It’s a single-entry visa, so if you leave Madagascar and return, you’ll need a new visa. Once in the country, extensions are possible (only once) for the same period initially granted.

While official processing time is up to 3 working days, we recommend applying at least one month before your trip to accommodate occasional delays. Holiday seasons may push timelines even further, so plan ahead.
Yes, but it’s not recommended. Visa on arrival is available at Ivato International Airport and some ports, but travelers report long lines, limited English-speaking staff, and issues with card payments.

Applying online in advance ensures faster processing, fewer delays, flexible payment options, and peace of mind.
Yes, the Madagascar eVisa covers short business meetings, conferences, and site visits, provided you aren’t being paid locally or engaging in any form of work.
You can apply for your eVisa through the government or iVisa (or download our mobile app).

For other visas, you’ll need to complete the application process on the government platform, pay the visa fee, and in some cases, schedule an interview at a Madagascar embassy or consulate.

Supporting documents like your passport, photo, and purpose of travel are required.
Yes, visa extensions are allowed but only once and must be arranged at the Ministry of Interior or regional immigration office.

Bring your passport, a copy of your visa, and a justification for the extension. Extension fees vary but are generally between MGA 140,000 and 240,000 (~USD 30–50) depending on your visa type.
Overstaying your visa in Madagascar is taken seriously. Fines are approximately MGA 100,000–150,000 per day (~USD 25–35), depending on the circumstances. You must pay the fine before exiting the country, and immigration may deny reentry in the future.
Yes, if you are traveling from or through a Yellow Fever–risk country (even if just in transit for more than 12 hours), you must show a valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate at immigration. If you fail to provide one, you may be denied entry.
  • Our team of iVisa experts will review your documents to make sure you have the best chance of being approved.
  • We then send it to the government for processing on your behalf.
  • Once your eVisa is approved, we’ll then email you your document.

In the meantime, download the iVisa app, so you can access your travel documents while you're on the go.
