Polish visa policy for American citizens

US citizens do not currently need a visa to visit Poland for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism or business. However, once the new travel authorization system is operational, US travelers will need to obtain an ETIAS authorization before entering Poland or any other Schengen Area country. The system is currently expected to be fully implemented by the end of 2026.

US citizens will need one Polish entry document:

ETIAS for Poland: A mandatory online travel authorization for visa-exempt travelers visiting the Schengen Area. Once implemented, it will allow US citizens to enter Poland for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism, business, or transit.

General Poland entry requirements for US travelers are:

  • US passport valid for at least six months
  • Confirmed return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel reservation or invitation letter)
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for the duration of the stay
  • Travel itinerary or purpose of visit
  • Other supporting documents, depending on purpose/situation

Frequently asked questions about getting the Poland visa with a United States passport

No, US citizens can enter Poland and the Schengen Area for tourism or business for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without a visa. This 90/180 rule is a rolling count across all Schengen member states combined. You must ensure your passport is stamped upon entry to track this period accurately.

While US citizens remain visa-exempt, starting in late 2026, they'll need an ETIAS travel authorization. This is an electronic visa waiver that must be applied for online before departure. It's valid for three years and is a mandatory requirement for entry into Poland and the rest of the Schengen Area.

If you plan to stay longer than 90 days, you must apply for a National Visa (D-type) at a Polish consulate in the US before your trip. This visa is valid for stays up to one year and is typically issued for work, study, or family reunification. It also allows you to travel to other Schengen countries for up to 90 days.

Yes. US citizens have the right to apply for a Temporary Residence Permit (karta pobytu) while physically in Poland on their 90-day visa-free stay. You must submit your application at the local Voivodeship Office (Urząd Wojewódzki) before your 90-day limit expires. If submitted on time, your stay remains legal while the application is being processed.

No. You cannot legally work in Poland on a visa-free entry alone. To work, your Polish employer must first obtain a work permit for you. Once the permit is granted, you must either hold a National Visa (D-type) issued for the purpose of work or have a Temporary Residence and Work Permit issued by the Polish authorities.
