Rwanda eVisa (Visitor Visa)

Purpose: The Rwanda eVisa (Visitor Visa) allows travelers to visit Rwanda for tourism, family visits, or short business trips.

When to apply: It’s recommended to apply at least a few days before your planned travel date.

Processing time: Most applications are processed within a few business days, though processing times may vary depending on volume.

Duration and extensions: The visa is typically valid for 30 days from the date of entry. Extensions may be possible through Rwanda Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration.

Entries: Usually issued as a single-entry visa, unless otherwise specified.

Delivery format: This is an electronic visa approval sent by email. Travelers must present a printed copy upon arrival.

Rwanda East Africa Tourist eVisa

Purpose: The Rwanda East Africa Tourist eVisa allows travelers to visit Rwanda, Kenya, and Uganda on a single visa for tourism.

When to apply: It’s recommended to apply at least a few days before your planned travel date. You must apply through the country you will enter first.

Processing time: Most applications are processed within a few business days, though processing times may vary.

Duration and extensions: The visa is valid for 90 days from the date of entry and allows travel between Rwanda, Kenya, and Uganda during that period. It cannot be extended.

Entries: Multiple entry between Rwanda, Kenya, and Uganda, provided you remain within these three countries.

Delivery format: This is an electronic visa approval sent by email. Travelers must present a printed copy upon arrival.

Transit visa*

The Rwanda Transit Visa is required for travelers passing through Rwanda on their way to another destination. It is typically valid for short stays of up to 72 hours and does not permit tourism or extended visits.

Rwanda visa policy

Most foreign nationals must obtain a visa before traveling to Rwanda for tourism, business, or transit. Many travelers are eligible to apply online for a Rwanda eVisa before departure, while others may qualify for a visa on arrival. U.S. citizens can obtain a visa on arrival or apply online in advance.

Rwanda also offers the East Africa Tourist Visa for travelers visiting Rwanda, Kenya, and Uganda on a single trip. Applicants must apply through the country they will enter first. Travelers should ensure they apply for the correct visa type based on their itinerary.

General Rwanda visa requirements are:

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry
  • Recent passport-style photo
  • Travel itinerary, including return or onward ticket
  • Proof of accommodation in Rwanda
  • Any additional supporting documents depending on the visa type
