Visa types needed for Sint Maarten

  • Sint Maarten Electronic Disembarkation (ED) Card
  • Short-stay Caribbean Visa*
  • Long-stay Caribbean Visa*

Sint Maarten Electronic Disembarkation (ED) Card

The Electronic Disembarkation (ED) Card is Sint Maarten’s online entry form designed to make the arrival process faster through customs and border control.

While it is not a visa and does not grant entry by itself, the form is mandatory for all travelers entering by land or sea, including residents and citizens.

Each ED Card is valid for a single entry, with the stay period tied to the traveler’s visa or passport. Once you leave the country, a new form must be completed before returning. The ED Card cannot be extended.

What documents you’ll need to apply for the Sint Maarten ED Card:

  • 🛂 A passport valid for 3 months after your arrival
  • ✈️ Your flight details
  • 🏨 Confirmed accommodation in Sint Maarten
  • 🎫 A return or onward ticket

Short-stay Caribbean Visa*

The short-stay Caribbean visa allows travelers to visit Sint Maarten for up to 90 days for purposes such as tourism, business, study, cultural events, sporting activities, religious gatherings, or visiting family and friends. It is valid for up to 180 days and can be issued for either single or multiple entries. The visa cannot be extended beyond the permitted stay.

Long-stay Caribbean Visa*

The long-stay Caribbean visa is intended for travelers planning to remain in Sint Maarten for more than 90 days. While it can be issued for various reasons, most applicants will need a local sponsor to apply. Validity, stay period, and the possibility of extensions are all determined on a case-by-case basis, with multiple entries permitted.

Sint Maarten visa policy

Citizens of visa-exempt countries, including many European Union nations, Canada, the United States, and several others, may enter Sint Maarten for tourism, business, or family visits without obtaining a visa in advance. Their permitted stay length varies, typically 30 to 90 days, with some nationalities eligible for more extended stays. However, all travelers must complete an ED Card before arrival and present proof of sufficient funds, return or onward travel, and accommodation.

Nationals from countries that are not visa-exempt must apply for a short-stay visa valid for the Dutch Caribbean, covering Sint Maarten and other territories such as Aruba, Curaçao, and Bonaire. This visa allows stays of up to 90 days within 180 days. Applications must be submitted through a Dutch embassy or consulate, and supporting documents include travel insurance, proof of financial means, and, in some cases, a sponsorship letter from a Sint Maarten resident or organization.

In addition to tourist and business visits, Sint Maarten also grants residence permits for employment, study, and family reunification, which require separate applications and approvals from the local immigration authorities.

Transit passengers who remain in the airport or continue their journey on the same calendar day may not require a visa, depending on their nationality. Travelers holding valid visas or residence permits for the United States, Canada, the Schengen Area, or the United Kingdom may be eligible for visa-free entry, even if their nationality requires typically a visa.

FAQs

It depends on your nationality. Citizens of visa-exempt countries, including the United States, Canada, the European Union, and several others, do not need a visa for short stays. Nationals of countries that are not visa-exempt must apply for a Dutch Caribbean visa through a Dutch embassy or consulate before traveling.

The Sint Maarten ED card is an online entry form that all travelers must complete before arriving in Sint Maarten. This includes both visa-exempt visitors and those who require a visa. The form must be submitted online prior to travel and includes health-related questions and basic trip details.

The ED card is valid for the duration of your trip to Sint Maarten. Travelers must complete a new ED card application for each trip.

Short stay visa applications for Sint Maarten must be submitted through a Dutch embassy or consulate. The visa is valid for travel within the Dutch Caribbean territories and typically allows stays of up to 90 days in a 180-day period. Required documents include a valid passport, proof of sufficient funds, travel insurance, and possibly an invitation or sponsorship letter.

Travelers holding a Dutch Caribbean short stay visa can stay for a maximum of 90 days within a 180-day period, with each visit limited to 30 consecutive days unless otherwise permitted.

Individuals intending to live, work, study, or join family in Sint Maarten for more than 90 days must apply for a residence permit. Eligibility depends on the purpose of the stay and meeting requirements such as proof of income, sponsorship, and health insurance.

You must submit a residence permit application to the Sint Maarten Immigration and Border Protection Service before traveling or through a local sponsor. Required documents typically include a valid passport, proof of purpose for stay, evidence of financial means, and health insurance.

Visa applicants are generally required to submit biometrics when applying through a Dutch embassy, as the short-stay visa follows Dutch Caribbean and Schengen procedures.

Visa-exempt travelers and short-stay visa holders may request an extension of stay at the Sint Maarten Immigration and Border Protection Service. Extensions are not guaranteed and are subject to immigration officials' discretion.
