First of all, you should know that Greenland is an autonomous region of the Kingdom of Denmark, so it is not an independent country. Despite its enormous size, it has a population of only 60,000 inhabitants. It is known worldwide for the beautiful features of its landscape that have become tourist attractions over time. The snow is perpetual to beautiful wildflowers that you find in the most traditional places from colossal mountains. In addition, you will be able to breathe totally clean air due to the contact with nature and the distance from the European continent’s pollution.
If you get to go to the northern part of Greenland, you can enjoy walking in the snow and see large polar bears and other wild animals in the place. Due to the characteristics of the region, few places are connected by roads. That means you will have to get around in other ways. As we said before, Greenland is a natural paradise that is perfect for anyone who wants to have a good time. One of the first places you should visit is the Ilulissat Ice-fjord. This attraction is considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will be amazed at how fascinating and indescribable the glaciers are. Remember to take the best pictures because this is a place that very few will be able to visit in their lives.
One of the natural attractions that most tourists love to visit is the close encounter with whales. Most glaciers melt in the summer months (June to August), and the waters become warmer. This means that many whales can go there for the abundance of fish as well. If you visit places like Qeqertarsuaq, you will have a chance to see them. We recommend you to be a bit patient as they don't usually show up that fast.
Among other places, you should visit the administrative capital of Greenland: Nuuk. It has a population of 16 thousand people and is known for the National Museum of Greenland. You will find the different remains, debris, helmets, and other elements of the Vikings who used to live in these lands in this place. At the same time, you will have the opportunity to take a close look at the different mummies from 5 centuries ago discovered in 1980. You will be able to see the different tattoos, clothes, and other elements of the communities that used to live in Greenland a long time ago.
During your stay in Greenland, it is very likely that you will see the Northern Lights (also known as Aurora Borealis). As you know, their proximity to the earth's magnetic field means that when the sun's rays hit them, they produce these beautiful lights that are part of a colorful night.
As you know, to enter Greenland, you will have to complete the Greenland Sumut Form. As you know, it is a document that collects information on all visitors who meet the conditions to visit the place. If you are one of them, you should fill it out to avoid any kind of problem when you arrive.
Besides the different museums where you will see elements of Greenland's Viking past, you will be able to see the ruins of its old buildings. These settlements are commonly found on the southern side of the region. You will also see the first Christian church built: Hvalsey Fjord Church. The more you get to know Greenland, the more you can visit the remains of the Eskimo community’s settlements. They lived there more than two thousand years ago but disappeared after that.
As we mentioned in the beginning, to see much of Greenland, you will have to use different transportation methods other than cars because there are not many roads connecting the places. It is for this very reason that dog sledding is quite common among these communities. That way, you will be able to see Greenland’s beautiful landscapes together with dogs that will be taking you to your destination.
In any case, if you wish to visit Greenland, you will have to follow the new travel rules that the coronavirus has implemented.
