New Zealand Working Holiday Visa*

If you are aged 18 to 30 (or up to 35 for a select few countries), and a citizen of a country that has a working holiday agreement with New Zealand, you can apply for a working holiday visa.

New Zealand offers several work visa types, including employer-assisted and skilled migrant options. These require a job offer or qualifications in demand.

There are also country-specific work visas, such as the China Skilled Workers Visa. To apply for this visa, you must be a citizen of the People’s Republic of China, have a job offer for a role on the China skilled job list, and meet the listed requirements. You can work in the job, for the employer, and in the location specified on your visa, for up to 3 years.

If you're from a visa-waiver country, you’ll just need an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority), even for short layovers.

If you're not from a visa-waiver country, and your layover involves changing planes or going landside, you’ll need to apply for a Transit Visa.

Unfortunately, we don’t currently offer this visa*

FAQs

This depends on the visa you’re issued. If you’re unclear, you can contact us on WhatsApp – we're available 24/7.

Processing times vary by visa type and embassy location. It can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks, especially during busy travel seasons.

The NZETA is for citizens of visa-waiver countries making short visits to New Zealand. It’s valid for 2 years and allows stays of up to 90 days per visit (or 6 months for UK citizens). It's quick to get and meant for tourism, business, or transit.

The Visitor Visa is for travelers who aren’t eligible for the NZETA or want to stay longer. It allows visits of up to 9 months, with the option to study for up to 3 months or work remotely for an overseas employer for up to 90 days. It requires more documentation and takes longer to process.

If you're from a visa-waiver country, the NZETA lets you visit New Zealand for up to 90 days per visit (or up to 6 months if you're a UK citizen). You can enter multiple times during the 2-year validity period, but you must leave before the 90-day limit each time.

For travelers not eligible for the NZETA or those planning a longer stay, the Visitor Visa allows you to stay for up to 9 months within an 18-month period. You can use this time for tourism, visiting friends/family, attending short business meetings, or studying for up to 3 months.

Yes, volunteering is allowed, but there are limits. You must work without pay or personal benefit, volunteer for non-profit organizations or community causes, and not replace a paid role.

For example, helping out at a wildlife reserve or charity event is usually fine. Paid work, including food and accommodation as compensation, is not allowed without a work visa.
You can apply for your ETA or Visitor Visa through the government or iVisa (or download our mobile app).

For other visas, you’ll need to complete the application process on the government platform, pay the visa fee, and in some cases, schedule an interview at a New Zealand embassy or consulate.

Supporting documents like your passport, photo, and purpose of travel are required.
No. An ETA or Visitor Visa does not permit any kind of employment. If you want to work to support your extended holiday, you can apply for a Working Holiday Visa. To take up a permanent job, you must apply for an official Work Visa.
No, you can’t extend a New Zealand ETA or visa. If you want to stay longer than the allowed days, you’ll need to apply for a different visa before your current one expires. Otherwise, you must leave the country and apply for a new ETA or visa before you go back to New Zealand.
Overstaying can lead to visa cancellation, fines, or bans on future travel to New Zealand. It’s important to leave the country before your visa expires or apply for an extension if eligible.
Yes, as of January 2025, you can work remotely for a foreign employer while visiting New Zealand, as long as you’re on a valid Visitor Visa, you don’t work for or earn income from a New Zealand business, your remote work is not the primary reason for your visit.

There’s no minimum income requirement, and you can work remotely for up to 90 days. It’s perfect for digital nomads or travelers mixing business with leisure.
