Hungary Budapest Landscape

Hungary is a European gem, steeped in history, bathed in natural beauty, and buzzing with vibrant culture. However, you’ll probably need one crucial document to enter this enchanting country: the Hungary Schengen Visa.

Suppose you're a business executive or tourist planning a trip to Hungary. In that case, our user-friendly platform simplifies the complex process of getting a Hungarian Schengen Visa, ensuring a smoother journey.

And if you're always on the go, we have an even better solution for you: our iVisa app. If you want more information about this and other Schengen visas, keep reading; we'll walk you through everything you need.

What is the Hungary Schengen Visa?

The Hungary Schengen Visa is a travel document that allows non-European Union (EU) citizens to visit Hungary and other countries within the Schengen Area.

The Schengen Area is a group of 27 European countries where you don't need passports or other border controls to travel between them. It's named after a 1985 agreement called the Schengen Agreement.

Hungary became part of the Schengen Area in 2007. Thus if you're from outside the EU and want to visit Hungary for a short stay (up to 90 days in 180 days), you might need a Hungary Schengen Visa. This visa can be used for all sorts of trips like tourism, business, visiting loved ones, or even passing through Hungary on your way somewhere else.

The Hungary Schengen Visa is your key to exploring Hungary and beyond without the hassle of obtaining separate visas for each country. It's a testament to the spirit of unity and freedom of movement within the Schengen Area.

Remember, this visa does not grant the right to work or study in Hungary or any Schengen country - you would need a different type of visa. Also, each Schengen country may have specific requirements when applying for a Schengen visa. This guide covers the specific requirements for Hungary.

What can you do with the Hungary Schengen Visa?

With the Hungary Schengen Visa, you can:

  • Travel freely within the Schengen Area, which includes 27 European countries, for tourism purposes.

  • Visit family and friends residing in Hungary or other Schengen countries.

  • Unpaid business activities such as business meetings, conferences, trade fairs, and exhibitions.

  • Short-term activities related to studies and internships

  • Attend sports or cultural events

  • Receive medical treatment

  • Training placements.

  • You can also enter by air, land, or sea with the Hungary Schengen Visa.

  • Transit through Hungary en route to a non-Schengen country.

What can you not do with the Hungary Schengen Visa?

However, there are certain things you cannot do with the Hungary Schengen Visa:

  • You cannot work or seek employment in Hungary or any other Schengen country.

  • You cannot study long-term (more than 90 days) in Hungary or any other Schengen country. For this, you must apply for a Student Visa.

Suppose you intend to stay in any Schengen member country for a more extended stay or are traveling for a reason not covered by the Schengen Visa. In that case, you will need to consider other visa types which may be more appropriately suited to your travel needs.

Who can apply for Hungary Schengen Visa?

The Hungarian Schengen Visa can be applied for by non-European Union nationals who want to travel to Hungary for short stays. This could be for various purposes such as tourism, business, visiting family or friends, or transiting through Hungary.

If you’re planning a multi-country trip within the Schengen Area, you should apply for a visa to the country where you plan to spend the most time. This means you should apply for the Hungary Visa if Hungary is your main destination (where you will spend the most time during your trip or if it is the first country you will visit).

Who is eligible for the Hungary Schengen Visa?

Currently, citizens from over 100 countries need to apply for the Hungary Schengen Visa. This includes India, China, Russia, and many countries in Africa and the Middle East.

If you want to know if your nationality is eligible for the Hungary Schengen Visa, use our handy Visa Checker Tool! You just need to select your country, and you will know which travel documents are available for you.

If you’re eligible, apply instantly with us!

Visa-exempt: Who doesn't need to apply for Hungary Schengen Visa?

There are several countries whose citizens do not need to apply for a Hungary Schengen Visa for short stays of up to 90 days. These visa-exempt countries include, but are not limited to:

  • United States

  • Canada

  • Australia

  • New Zealand

  • Japan

  • South Korea

  • Brazil

  • Singapore

  • Israel

  • Malaysia

Additionally, all European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) countries, and Switzerland citizens can travel to Hungary and other Schengen countries without a visa.

Please note that these are just a few examples, and the list of visa-exempt countries is extensive. Also, visa exemption applies only to tourism, family, and business trips. A visa or residence permit might still be necessary for longer stays or purposes such as work or study, even for nationals of these countries.

For the most accurate and up-to-date information, it's always recommended to use a Visa checker tool.

Do minors have to apply for the Hungary Schengen Visa?

However, the application process for minors (children under the age of 18) includes some additional steps and requirements:
