Mauritania is a country in Northwest Africa. Some regions should be avoided because of violence, but that does not mean you should overlook the fact that some parts are safe and fascinating to see. For one thing, there are a few countries in which you can see how sand dunes end in the ocean - it is a beautiful thing to see. The desert may be rough, but it provides some extraordinary landscapes. Massive dunes, rocky desert, and small tabular mountains are what makes Mauritania a special place. Not to mention that the country is paradise for bird watchers. Banc d’Arguin is a nature reserve that has millions of birds. It is also protected by UNESCO.
Before you start planning a trip to Mauritania, consider the fact that you may need a visa to cross its borders. According to Mauritania’s visa policy, every traveler must obtain a visa from the nearest Mauritanian embassy or diplomatic mission unless they are from one of the 9 visa-exempt countries, or if they get a visa on arrival. The visa-exempt nationals are allowed to stay within the country for up to 90 days without a visa. As for the rest of the nationalities in the world, it seems that every single traveler who is not visa exempt can get a visa on arrival. However, there is one condition. Visas on arrival are available only at Nouakchott-Oumtounsy International Airport. Any other point of entry requires a trip to the embassy.
If you want to find out if you are visa-exempt or not, you can read Mauritania’s visa policy, or even better, you can use iVisa’s Visa Checker. The tool is easy to use and makes the information you need available in just a few clicks. First, you must click on the button that says Visa Checker. You can see it in the top right corner. Then, you must select your country of origin in the drag-down menu on the left and Mauritania in the right menu. The result will display whether or not you need a visa. And if you do, you will receive some useful information. iVisa cannot assist you with the visa application process at the moment. Mauritania does not have electronic visas available. Even so, we would like to help you, which is why we put our support service at your disposal 24/7. The service is free of charge.
If you find out that you need a visa and you do not plan to enter Mauritania via the Nouakchott-Oumtounsy International Airport, you need to go to the nearest Mauritanian embassy and apply for a visa. But first, you need to find out the requirements. You can find a lot of information online, but we think that you should use that as a reference only. A diplomatic mission or an embassy will always be the most reliable source of information. You should contact them before visiting. In the meantime, what we can tell you is that you need a valid passport that does not expire for another 6 months from the date of arrival in Mauritania.
For the moment, that is all we can do for you, but we hope that the information above is of some help.
