- Who it's for
- Every foreign national entering Mexico by land, including all the nationalities that are visa-exempt for Mexico. It sits on top of any visa or electronic authorization you also need, rather than replacing it. Mexican nationals and holders of Mexican temporary or permanent residency do not need one.
- What it is, and is not
- The Forma Migratoria Multiple is an entry and exit record, not a visa. It records your arrival as a visitor without permission to work, and it does not authorize employment in Mexico.
- How you travel
- Land border crossings only. Travelers arriving by air or sea complete their record through the airline or cruise line as part of boarding, without the online step and the drive to the border.
- Delivery format
- You receive a PDF to print and present in person at the land port of entry, where an immigration officer stamps it. The online step alone does not complete it, because the stamp is what makes the record live.
- Good to know
- Every traveler needs their own, infants included, with no minimum-age exemption, and notarized parental consent is recommended when a child travels with only one parent. A passport card works for the land crossing but not for an onward or return flight, so a land-in and air-out trip needs a full passport.
- Validity
- Valid for 6 months
- Entry
- Single entry
- Length of stay
- Stay up to 6 months in total
- Processing time
- Get it in as fast as 15 minutes

Mexico visa FAQs
Quick answers to the most common questions about the Mexico Tourist Card - Land.
Still have questions?
Our visa experts are available 24/7 on chat, email, and WhatsApp.
Is the Mexico Tourist Card the same as a visa?
No. The Mexico Tourist Card (FMM) is an entry permit, not a visa. Citizens from countries like the US, Canada, UK, and EU don't need a visa for tourism, but everyone must have a valid FMM to enter the country legally by land.
Can I use a Passport Card to apply for the Mexico Tourist Card?
Yes. For land border crossings only, a US Passport Card is an acceptable form of identification to obtain your Mexico Tourist Card. However, if you plan to fly within Mexico or return to your home country by air, you'll need a standard passport.
How long can I stay in Mexico with a Tourist Card?
You can be granted up to 180 days. However, the specific number of days is decided by the immigration officer at the border. They'll write the expiration date on your stamped form. It's important to check this date immediately to ensure you don't overstay.
Do I need to get my Mexico Tourist Card stamped?
Yes. If you apply online, your Tourist Card is not valid until it's stamped by an official at the border's INM (Instituto Nacional de Migración) office. Entering without a stamp means you're in the country illegally, which can lead to fines or detention at internal checkpoints.
What happens if I lose my Mexico Tourist Card?
If you lose your paper FMM, you must visit a local immigration office (INM) to apply for a replacement. You'll be required to pay a replacement fee. You cannot leave the country without presenting either your original stamped card or a valid replacement.
Can I extend my Mexico Tourist Card?
No. The Mexico Tourist Card cannot be extended or renewed. If you want to stay longer, you must leave the country and re-enter to obtain a new FMM, or apply for a temporary residency visa at a Mexican consulate before your trip.
Do children need their own Mexico Tourist Card?
Yes. Every traveler, including infants and children, must have their own individual FMM. If a minor is traveling with only one parent, it's highly recommended to carry a notarized consent form from the other parent to avoid delays at the border.
What happens if my Mexico Tourist Card application is denied?
If denied, you will receive a notification. In many cases, denials are due to incorrect passport or travel details. You can usually re-apply after 24 hours once you've corrected the errors.
