Chinese outbound flight bookings skyrocket by 120% while visa delays loom

The travel landscape in China is undergoing a massive shift this summer, with flight bookings to Central Asian hotspots like Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan skyrocketing by 120%.

However, the surge in outbound interest has triggered a critical warning for those heading to Europe and the UK, as visa processing times are stretching to six weeks or more due to an unprecedented application "crunch."

According to VFS Global, the outsourcing giant managing visa services for dozens of countries, the first quarter of 2026 has already seen a steady rise in submissions. Simon Peachey, VFS Global’s Chief Operating Officer for China, noted at a Beijing briefing that many consulates have reinstated strict biometric requirements, creating a bottleneck just as the peak July–August travel window approaches.

Millions of inbound travelers expected

While long-haul travelers navigate paperwork, regional travel is thriving. The upcoming May Day holiday (May 1–5) is serving as a litmus test for this year's growth. The National Immigration Administration (NIA) projects that daily cross-border flows will average 2.25 million passengers, with a single-day peak expected to exceed 2.4 million. This represents a significant increase compared to previous years, highlighting a robust recovery in regional mobility.

"Different traveler groups are now bringing distinct expectations to the application process," says Peachey, highlighting a shift toward personalized and premium services.

This trend is echoed in the "China Travel" boom, where inbound tourism is also spiking. Inbound visitors from Kazakhstan are expected to increase fivefold this holiday, while arrivals from France and the UK are projected to double and triple, respectively, thanks to expanded visa-free policies.

The summer 2026 season is defined by a pivot toward "nature and outdoor fun." While Southeast Asia remains a staple, Central Asia has emerged as the breakout star. Destinations like Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan are seeing triple-digit growth as travelers seek uncrowded, cost-effective alternatives to traditional European routes.

For those still eyeing Europe or North America, applicants are urged to book UK, US, and European visa appointments 90 to 180 days in advance. Travelers are also cautioned against "express slot" scams on social media, as official appointments must be booked through verified channels and often require a mandatory personal appearance for fingerprints.
