Qatar has officially discontinued its temporary policy of automatically extending expired and soon-to-expire entry visas, with the change taking effect on Sunday, June 7, 2026. All standard visa rules, renewal timelines, and processing fees are now back in force, according to Qatar's Ministry of Interior, which shared the announcement on X.
The decision covers all categories of entry visas issued in Qatar, including tourist visas, business visas, family visit visas, and other short-term entry permits.
Why the extension existed in the first place
The Ministry of Interior first introduced the automatic extension on March 3, 2026, as a short-term measure to provide administrative and humanitarian relief. Under that policy, anyone in Qatar on an expired or nearly expired visa was allowed to stay in the country legally without having to immediately renew their documents or leave.
The arrangement was particularly helpful for expats, business travelers, and families on visit visas, as it eased congestion at immigration offices and gave people extra breathing room to sort out their paperwork. Now that conditions have stabilized, the Ministry has decided that the temporary measure has served its purpose and normal immigration operations need to resume.
What visa holders need to do now
The Ministry has called on all residents, visitors, sponsors, and other relevant parties to act quickly and make sure their immigration status is in order. People currently in Qatar should verify their visa status without delay and complete any pending renewals within the official deadlines that are now back in effect. The standard renewal fees apply again based on the approved tariff for each visa type. Anyone who does not intend to renew should leave the country before their visa lapses.
Failing to act in time could result in legal consequences, financial penalties, or formal overstay proceedings under Qatar's immigration laws.
