Papua New Guinea has numerous tourist spots despite its size. One of them is its capital city, Port Moresby, which is also the main entry point for international visitors. The city is located in an area called the National Capital District or NCD, on the southern coast of the country. It was named by Captain John Moresby in 1873, and since then, it has become the commercial and economical center of the country.

In Port Moresby, you can visit the famous Markets full of fresh foods and traditional crafts. You can also visit Parliament House, a building which was designed in the style of a Maprik Haus Tambaran, or house of spirits. This building opened in 1984 and today has a small shop inside to buy souvenirs. Additionally, it has a display of Papua New Guinea’s butterflies, which is another interesting element of national fauna.

Port Moresby Nature Park is another must-see if you visit the capital city. This park is the country's only combined Botanical and Zoological Park and Garden. It is a shelter of greenery, with two kilometers of boardwalk threading under a bush canopy, green lawns, excellent wildlife samples, and a large collection of orchids.

One last point you should visit in Port Moresby is the National Museum and Art Gallery. It is very close to Parliament House, and it’s an excellent point to appreciate the fauna, culture, ethnography, and history of Papua New Guinea, including amazing examples of shields, masks, and local foods.

A few kilometers north of Port Moresby, there’s Oro Province. The history of this province is as impressive as its landscapes, as it has a well-known golden beginning that was later darkened due to the devastating Pacific campaign of World War II. Besides, years later Mt Lamington erupted which was a deadly incident for locals. However, in the following years, this province changed for good with many locals making the best possible to maintain their traditions and simultaneously protect the beauty of the place.

We recommend you to do some of these activities in Oro: take a selfie with Queen Alexandra birdwing, which is the largest butterfly on Earth. Watch the antique practice of beating the bark of a mulberry tree into soft tapa cloth, and also get to know hammerhead sharks and moray eels on a diving tour.

Papua New Guinea is divided into multiple provinces, and one of the most popular is Milne Bay Province. Its main tourist attraction is its coastline, as it is located at the extreme eastern end of Papua New Guinea. Thanks to this large coastline, you can easily dive in and learn more about national wildlife. Aside from that coastline, you can also go to Fergusson Island and enjoy the active thermal region with natural hot springs. If you prefer something more related to the cultural lifestyle, then you can also attend Alotau’s Kenu and Kundu Festival and Milamala’s Yam Harvest Festival on the islands of love.

The Western Highlands is another province that you should visit. This province is a bustling commercial center where wealth from coffee and tea plantations has brought quick changes to the traditional lifestyle. Here you can enjoy the Western Highlands Cultural Centre featuring a reconstructed village hut and exhibits of artifacts and curios, or you can gain permission to visit the archaeological sites at Kuk Valley.

There's a lot to do in Papua New Guinea, so it's difficult to get bored there. However, there are some tips that you can not miss while you are in that country so that your stay can be more pleasant.

Firstly, you should always get a professional guide to explore the country, as there’s no public land in PNG, or at least it’s not common. Every inch of space in this country belongs to the people, meaning that you must ask for permission to explore. You must be careful where you’re going while you’re there, otherwise, you could create an uncomfortable situation with locals.

Lastly, remember to follow the health protocols in the country once you arrive there, including wearing a face mask due to the coronavirus outbreak. Don’t forget to check if you’re eligible for a visa or not on our website, as well as to apply for the Papua New Guinea Health Declaration Form before arriving there. The Papua New Guinea Health Declaration Form is mandatory for all travelers, so be aware of not forgetting it.
