Qatar visa policy

Nationals of over 95 countries, including the US, UK, EU states, Canada, and Australia, can enter Qatar visa-free for stays of up to 30 or 90 days, depending on nationality. These visa-free stays cannot be extended beyond their allowed period, and travelers must exit before expiry to avoid penalties. For travelers from visa-required countries, the Qatar Tourist eVisa (Hayya A1) allows a 30-day stay within 90 days of issuance, with the option to extend once for an additional 30 days.

Qatar also offers specialized electronic visas through the Hayya Portal, including the GCC Resident Visa (A2), Visa with ETA (A3), and Visa for Companions of GCC Citizens (A4). These allow eligible travelers to apply online, often receiving approval within a few days, simplifying entry procedures and reducing time at immigration counters upon arrival.

For longer stays or specialized travel purposes, Qatar uses a sponsor-based visa system managed by the Ministry of Interior. Employers, educational institutions, family members, and registered entities in Qatar can sponsor visas for work, family residence, student programs, business travel, and investment. These applications require submission through the relevant government channels, and once approved, the visa is issued for entry and subsequent residence permit processing within Qatar.

Travelers should always check Qatar’s official government portals, the Hayya Portal, or consult with a Qatari embassy to confirm the latest visa requirements before making travel plans.

FAQs

Whether you need a visa depends on your nationality and travel purpose. Nationals from over 90 countries, including the US, UK, EU, Canada, and Australia, can enter Qatar visa-free for 30 or 90 days, depending on their passport. Travelers from visa-required countries can apply online for the Qatar Tourist eVisa, which allows a 30-day stay within 90 days of issuance, with the option to extend once for 30 days.
Most travelers receive their Qatar eVisa within 2 to 3 weeks after applying online through the iVisa platform. It’s best to apply at least four weeks before your planned travel date.
If you enter Qatar with a tourist eVisa or a visa-on-arrival that allows extensions, you may request a one-time 30-day extension before your initial authorized stay expires. Visa-free stays for many nationalities cannot be extended, so it is important to check your specific visa conditions before planning a longer stay.
Tourists visiting Qatar need a passport valid for at least six months from their arrival date, a confirmed return or onward ticket, and proof of accommodation. Some travelers may also need to show travel insurance covering their stay, while others will require a visa depending on their nationality.
Qatar is considered one of the safest countries in the Middle East for tourists, with low crime rates and a stable environment. Travelers should respect local customs and laws, dress modestly in public places, and stay informed about regulations related to behavior and conduct while in Qatar.
US citizens do not need to apply for a visa in advance for short tourism visits to Qatar. They are eligible for visa-free entry upon arrival, allowing a stay of up to 30 days, which can be extended once for an additional 30 days if needed.
No, you cannot work in Qatar on a tourist visa. If you plan to work in Qatar, you will need a work visa sponsored by a Qatari employer, which is processed through the Ministry of Labour and Ministry of Interior. Working on a tourist visa is illegal and may result in fines, deportation, and bans on re-entry.
