Saudi Arabia’s visa rules depend on where you’re from, why you’re visiting, and how long you plan to stay. If you’re a citizen of a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) country you can enter with just your national ID card. Some diplomatic and official passport holders from countries like the UK, France, and Malaysia also get short-term visa-free entry.
For most other nationalities, Saudi Arabia’s electronic visa system has made travel much simpler in recent years. The eVisa now covers over 65 countries, and more have been added as Saudi Arabia continues to expand its tourism push. In many cases, travelers get their eVisas approved within days, all done online.
For travelers who don’t meet these eligibility options, the traditional consular visa is still available. These embassy-issued visas cover work, study, family reunions, long-term residency, or specialized business activities. They typically require more paperwork, including sponsor letters, employment contracts, or proof of enrollment, depending on the type of visa you’re applying for.
Saudi Arabia has also started offering short-term event-based visas through its Sharek platform. If you’re attending certain concerts, sporting events, or cultural festivals, you can apply for a Sharek visa at the same time you purchase your event ticket. It’s a convenient option for visitors who are just coming for a specific event.
Saudi Arabia takes overstaying very seriously. If you stay beyond your permitted time, you can face daily fines, detention, deportation, and future bans from entering the country. It’s important to keep track of your allowed stay and exit before your visa expires.
