This is part of the Been There, Done That series, where our expert globetrotters travel the world to get the insights and information you need for a seamless experience.

Bangkok offers travelers the convenience of two international airports. For those flying domestically within Thailand or to destinations in Southeast Asia and China, Don Mueang International Airport (DMK) is a highly recommended option.

Having experienced both DMK and Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), DMK provides a more streamlined and efficient experience compared to the often overcrowded and chaotic atmosphere at BKK. I had a much easier time and more enjoyable experience flying out of DMK than during previous trips out of BKK.

From my arrival at DMK, checking my bags, clearing immigration, and passing through security was smooth and hassle-free. The well-maintained and well-stocked international terminal at DMK ensures passengers a comfortable and enjoyable experience regardless of nationality and visa requirements.

Traveling to Don Mueang International Airport (DMK) is a breeze thanks to its excellent connectivity and accessibility.

Located on the MRT red line and just off the freeway, DMK offers passengers the convenience of reaching the airport by train, car, or Grab with ease.

The journey from Bangkok's city center to DMK is shorter and less congested, with significantly less traffic than the route to Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK).

Having a shorter and less jammed trip to DMK compared to BKK was a more enjoyable experience for me as I didn’t have to leave multiple hours earlier and stress while sitting in traffic.

Upon arrival at DMK, I was dropped outside my terminal. The two terminals are connected by a short walkway, ensuring that even if you are dropped at the wrong terminal, which does happen, it is a quick and easy walk to the correct one.

This efficient layout further enhances the convenience of traveling to and from Don Mueang International Airport.

Checking in: A fast experience

I enjoyed a quick check-in process at Don Mueang International Airport (DMK) due to the fewer passengers passing through. Most airlines at DMK offer self-check-in kiosks, which help to keep lines short and moving quickly.

Once you've weighed your bag and received a checked baggage tag, you'll proceed to a customs scanner, where an agent will scan your checked bag and drop it off for you. This is different from normal, where the airline representative drops your bag for you at the check-in counter.

After checking in and dropping off your baggage, I proceed to the immigration area. An airport agent will scan your boarding pass before you approach an immigration officer, who will scan your biometrics and take your photo before allowing you to proceed.

Pro-tip: Don’t overpack liquids in your carry-on; always put them in a clear ziplock bag to avoid the hassle at the counter.

As you pass through security, you must be aware of the liquid restrictions in your carry-on. Similar to the regulations in the US, you can't overpack liquids in your carry-on if they exceed 100ml. I saw security personnel take them away from several passengers over the limit.

International Terminal: Stocked with shopping and restaurants

Upon entering the Don Mueang International Airport (DMK) international terminal, passengers are greeted with various shopping and dining options.

The terminal is well-stocked, with numerous stores, restaurants, and comfortable seating areas, ensuring a pleasant experience for travelers.

Specific charger locations are available throughout the terminal for those needing an outlet to charge their devices. Many of them were full, so I had to go to one of the gates to find an outlet to charge my phone before my flight.

While these spots may require a bit of searching, they provide a convenient solution for staying connected while waiting for your flight.

If you prefer a more exclusive and comfortable experience, DMK offers two comparable lounges for a fee of 850 baht (approximately US$25).

These lounges provide access to food, outlets, and a relaxing atmosphere, making them an excellent option for passengers looking to unwind before their flight.
