Do you want to travel to the United States? Then there are a series of steps you must complete before traveling. The most essential is to obtain your American Visa (B1/B2) if your nationality requires it.

You must first request the DS-160 Form, the official document that allows you to initiate the visa process. At iVisa, we have created this guide where you will learn about this form, its cost, and much more.

Fill me in

What is the DS-160 Form?

The DS-160 Form is an online document representing the first step to applying for the non-immigrant American B1/B2 visa process. This document is entirely electronic; any foreign traveler can request and fill it out from home.

This form is for all foreign travelers who wish to apply for a non-immigrant visa, including those who apply for a B1/B2 visa. It is mandatory for tourists visiting the United States for a limited time.

You should only select this document if the reasons for the trip are for tourism, business, medical treatment, or visiting family and friends. Any other reason for travel will have a different procedure that you can consult with our experts.

Remember that the information you write in the form must be truthful, as all the information will be received and verified by the consular services of the U.S. Department of State. Then, based on this form, you will be asked more questions in the interview to decide your eligibility for the visa.

Information required to fill out the DS-160 Form

To complete this form, you must have the following documents on hand:

  • Passport

  • Travel itinerary

  • Dates of the last five trips to the United States (if you have traveled before)

  • Curriculum vitae, you may be asked for information about your education and work history.

Some applicants will need to bring all these documents and additional ones on the day of the interview, which will be scheduled after completing the form.

How to fill out the DS-160 Form?

To fill out the DS-160 Form, the applicant must follow these steps:

  • Step 1 - Identification: You must enter your identification information. Then, you will receive a payment confirmation email to the specified address and can access the next segment of the form.

  • Step 2 - Travel Details and Additional Information: The user must complete the second part of the DS-160 form. You’ll see the information to enter in the next question.

  • Step 3 - Confirmation: For confirmation, you will receive an email with an official document containing your DS-160 identifier number. You must print this document to take to the interview. You will also find a link to download the form with your answers in the email.

In the end, you’ll receive instructions to pay the official visa application fee. This payment is essential to schedule your appointment at the embassy, which will be the next step in your American visa application.
