The service to renew your passport online

The United States once offered a service to renew your passport online, marking a significant leap in modernizing the passport application process. However, this service was never intended to be permanent in its initial form. On March 8, 2023, the U.S. Department of State paused this limited release of the online renewal service. The pause was not due to any systemic issues but rather a proactive measure to incorporate improvements based on valuable customer feedback.

During this limited-release phase, over 500,000 customers participated as volunteers to submit their applications online and test the system's efficiency and user-friendliness. The goal is to relaunch a more robust, user-friendly online passport renewal service in a full, nationwide release, addressing the needs and feedback of those who participated in the initial phase.

In the interim, passport renewal remains accessible through traditional methods. Eligible applicants can renew their passports via mail. While not as convenient as an online system, this process is streamlined and effective, ensuring that your travel documents are up-to-date and ready for your upcoming travels.

How to renew your US passport

Though the option to renew your passport online isn’t currently available, there are still some facilities available. The most common method now to apply for passport renewal is through mail. For this, you must meet certain criteria, which include being over 16 years old and having a recent passport in good condition. Click here to check your eligibility for US passport renewal.

To renew your passport by mail, start by filling out the DS-82 form, which can be a bit lengthy, and gathering all necessary documentation. You'll need to purchase two envelopes from the United States Postal Service (USPS) – one for submitting your application and another for the return of your documents. Place your completed application, current passport, all supporting documents, and a check for the fees in the envelope. Then, dispatch your package to the designated address for passport services.
