Portuguese visa policy for Brazilian citizens

Brazilian citizens do not currently need a visa to visit Portugal for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism or business. However, once the new travel authorization system is operational, Brazilian travelers will need to obtain an ETIAS authorization before entering Portugal or any other Schengen Area country. The system is currently expected to be fully implemented by the end of 2026.

Brazilians will need one Portuguese entry document:

ETIAS for Portugal: A mandatory online travel authorization for visa-exempt travelers visiting the Schengen Area. Once implemented, it will allow Brazilian citizens to enter Portugal for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism, business, or transit.

General Portugal entry requirements for Brazilian travelers are:

  • Brazil passport valid for at least six months
  • Confirmed return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel reservation or invitation letter)
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for the duration of the stay
  • Travel insurance covering at least €30,000 in medical and repatriation costs
  • Travel itinerary or purpose of visit
  • Other supporting documents, depending on purpose/situation

For work, study, or stays exceeding 90 days, a national visa is required and must be applied for in person.

The ETIAS system has not launched yet, so official processing times have not been confirmed. Most applications are expected to be processed quickly once the system becomes operational. With iVisa, you can apply for the ETIAS for Portugal online and receive expert guidance throughout the process.

Brazilian nationals can stay in Portugal for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without a visa for tourism or business. Uniquely, Brazilians can often apply to extend this for an additional 90 days (totaling 180 days) through AIMA. Starting in late 2026, an ETIAS authorization will be mandatory for entry.

Brazilian citizens do not need a transit visa for Portugal, regardless of whether the transit is airside or landside. As visa-exempt nationals for short stays, you can transit freely. However, starting in late 2026, you will likely need a valid ETIAS authorization for any transit through the Schengen Area.

Yes, Brazilian nationals can typically extend their stay for an additional 90 days, for a total of 180 days, through an application with AIMA. This special privilege stems from the bilateral agreement between Brazil and Portugal. However, extensions for tourism are subject to approval and require proof of funds.
