Spanish visa policy for American citizens

US citizens do not currently need a visa to visit Spain for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism or business. However, once the new travel authorization system is operational, US travelers will need to obtain an ETIAS authorization before entering Spain or any other Schengen Area country. The system is currently expected to be fully implemented by the end of 2026.

US citizens will need one Spanish entry document:

  • ETIAS for Spain: A mandatory online travel authorization for visa-exempt travelers visiting the Schengen Area. Once implemented, it will allow US citizens to enter Spain for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism, business, or transit.

General Spain entry requirements for US travelers are:

  • USA passport valid for at least six months
  • Confirmed return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel reservation or invitation letter)
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for the duration of the stay
  • Travel insurance covering at least €30,000 in medical and repatriation costs
  • Travel itinerary or purpose of visit
  • Other supporting documents, depending on purpose/situation

Frequently asked questions about getting the Spain visa with a United States passport

No, US citizens do not need a visa for short stays in Spain. You can travel for up to 90 days within any 180-day period for tourism or business. However, starting in the last quarter of 2026, you will be required to obtain an ETIAS travel authorization before departure. For stays exceeding 90 days, or for specific purposes like work or long-term study, a national visa is required.

The ETIAS system has not launched yet, so official processing times have not been confirmed. Most applications are expected to be processed quickly once the system becomes operational. With iVisa, you can apply for the ETIAS for Spain online and receive expert guidance throughout the process.

US nationals can stay in Spain for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without a visa. This limit applies to the entire Schengen Area combined. For stays exceeding 90 days, you must apply for a national visa before traveling. Additionally, starting in the last quarter of 2026, you will be required to obtain an ETIAS travel authorization online before your departure to Spain.

US citizens do not need a visa to transit through Spain, provided they stay in the international transit area. However, beginning in late 2026, you must obtain an ETIAS travel authorization before departure, even for transit. If your connection requires passing through border control, you will enter visa-free for 90 days.

US nationals cannot extend their visa-free stay in Spain for leisure. Extensions are strictly reserved for exceptional "force majeure" situations, such as medical emergencies or natural disasters. You must apply for a national visa or residency from within the United States if you plan to stay beyond 90 days.
