Spain visa requirements for British citizens

UK citizens do not currently need a visa to visit Spain for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism or business. However, once the new travel authorization system is operational, UK travelers will need to obtain an ETIAS authorization before entering Spain or any other Schengen Area country. The system is currently expected to be fully implemented by the end of 2026.

UK citizens will need one Spanish entry document:

  • ETIAS for Spain: A mandatory online travel authorization for visa-exempt travelers visiting the Schengen Area. Once implemented, it will allow UK citizens to enter Spain for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism, business, or transit.

General Spain entry requirements for UK travelers are:

  • United Kingdom passport valid for at least six months
  • Confirmed return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel reservation or invitation letter)
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for the duration of the stay
  • Travel insurance covering at least €30,000 in medical and repatriation costs
  • Travel itinerary or purpose of visit
  • Other supporting documents, depending on purpose/situation

Spain visa FAQs

What British travelers commonly ask about Spain visas

UK citizens do not currently need a visa for short trips to Spain. You can stay for up to 90 days within any 180-day period for tourism or business. However, starting in late 2026, you will be required to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization online before your departure. For stays exceeding 90 days, or for work and long-term study, you must apply for the appropriate national visa before traveling.

The ETIAS system has not launched yet, so official processing times have not been confirmed. Most applications are expected to be processed quickly once the system becomes operational. With iVisa, you can apply for the ETIAS for Spain online and receive expert guidance throughout the process.

UK nationals can stay in Spain for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without a visa. This is a rolling limit that applies to the entire Schengen Area combined. To stay longer for work, study, or residency, you must apply for a specific national visa. Additionally, starting in late 2026, you will need to obtain an ETIAS travel authorization online before your trip.

No, UK citizens do not need a visa to transit through Spanish airports. As a visa-exempt nationality, you can remain in the international transit area or enter the country for a layover without a visa. However, starting in late 2026, you will need an ETIAS authorization for such transits.

UK nationals cannot extend their visa-free stay for tourism. Extensions are strictly granted only for exceptional "force majeure" circumstances, such as a medical emergency or natural disaster that makes travel impossible. You must apply for a national long-stay visa or residency before traveling if you intend to stay beyond 90 days.
