Spanish visa policy for Colombian citizens

Colombia citizens do not currently need a visa to visit Spain for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism or business. However, once the new travel authorization system is operational, travelers will need to obtain an ETIAS authorization before entering Spain or any other Schengen Area country. The system is currently expected to be fully implemented by the end of 2026.

Colombian citizens will need one Spanish entry document:

  • ETIAS for Spain: A mandatory online travel authorization for visa-exempt travelers visiting the Schengen Area. Once implemented, it will allow Colombians to enter Spain for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism, business, or transit.

General Spain entry requirements for Colombian travelers are:

  • Colombia passport valid for at least six months
  • Confirmed return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel reservation or invitation letter)
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for the duration of the stay
  • Travel insurance covering at least €30,000 in medical and repatriation costs
  • Travel itinerary or purpose of visit
  • Other supporting documents, depending on purpose/situation

Frequently asked questions about getting the Spain visa with a Colombia passport

No, Colombian citizens do not need a visa for short stays in Spain. You can travel for tourism, business, or family visits for up to 90 days within any 180-day period using only a biometric passport. However, starting in late 2026, you will be required to obtain an ETIAS travel authorization before your flight. For stays exceeding 90 days, a national long-stay visa remains mandatory.

The ETIAS system has not launched yet, so official processing times have not been confirmed. Most applications are expected to be processed quickly once the system becomes operational. With iVisa, you can apply for the ETIAS for Spain online and receive expert guidance throughout the process.

Colombian nationals can stay in Spain for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without a visa. This cumulative limit applies across the entire Schengen Area for tourism, business, or family visits. For longer stays, you must apply for a national visa before traveling. Starting in late 2026, you will also need to secure an ETIAS travel authorization online before your departure to Spain.

No, Colombian citizens do not need a visa to transit through Spain, provided they remain in the airport's international zone. However, starting in late 2026, you must obtain an ETIAS travel authorization before your flight. If you need to clear border control for any reason, you enter visa-free.

Colombian nationals cannot extend their visa-free stay in Spain for tourism. Extensions are granted only for exceptional, unforeseen circumstances like medical emergencies or force majeure. However, in 2026, Spain has launched a temporary amnesty allowing undocumented foreigners who met specific residence criteria before 2026 to apply for residency.
