Spanish visa policy for Canadian citizens

Canadian citizens do not currently need a visa to visit Spain for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism or business. However, once the new travel authorization system is operational, Canadian travelers will need to obtain an ETIAS authorization before entering Spain or any other Schengen Area country. The system is currently expected to be fully implemented by the end of 2026.

Canadians will need one Spanish entry document:

ETIAS for Spain: A mandatory online travel authorization for visa-exempt travelers visiting the Schengen Area. Once implemented, it will allow Canadian citizens to enter Spain for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism, business, or transit.

General Spain entry requirements for Canadian travelers are:

  • Canada passport valid for at least six months
  • Confirmed return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel reservation or invitation letter)
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for the duration of the stay
  • Travel insurance covering at least €30,000 in medical and repatriation costs
  • Travel itinerary or purpose of visit
  • Other supporting documents, depending on purpose/situation

Frequently asked questions about getting the Spain visa with a Canada passport

Canadian citizens do not need a visa to enter Spain for stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period for tourism or business. However, starting in late 2026, Canadians will need to obtain an ETIAS travel authorization before departure. Ensure your passport is valid for at least three months beyond your planned date of exit from the Schengen Area.

The ETIAS system has not launched yet, so official processing times have not been confirmed. Most applications are expected to be processed quickly once the system becomes operational. With iVisa, you can apply for the ETIAS for Spain online and receive expert guidance throughout the process.

Canadian nationals can stay in Spain for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without a visa. This allowance covers tourism, business, and short-term study. To stay longer, you must apply for a specific residence or long-stay visa before traveling. Always ensure your passport is valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area.

Canadian citizens do not need a visa to transit through Spanish airports, provided they remain in the international transit area. However, if your connection requires passing through border control to change terminals or collect baggage, the standard 90-day visa-free entry rules apply. Starting late 2026, an ETIAS authorization will be required.

Extensions of visa-free entry are typically granted only for exceptional circumstances, such as medical emergencies, humanitarian reasons, or force majeure (e.g., natural disasters). You cannot extend your stay for general tourism. Applications must be submitted at a local Foreigners' Office (Oficina de ExtranjerĂa) before your initial 90-day period expires.
