It’s time for a family reunion! The Canadian government introduced the Super Visa for parents and grandparents to visit loved ones that are permanent residents in Canada. It’s part of family-class immigration visas, so you can enjoy spending time with your family members, the country’s culture, and the Canadian lifestyle.

You have to meet some requirements to apply for this visa, but we are here to help you understand Canada's immigration policies. This article will provide details about immigration law and the visa process, so you can be prepared to visit Canada!

What is the Canada Super visa?

Travelers can apply for a Parents and Grandparents Super Visa, so they can visit Canada to rejoin their children or grandchildren. The document allows multiple entries for a period of up to 10 years, and the applicants can stay for up to two years or five years at a time (visa officers will confirm how long you can stay when you enter the country).

It’s not a permanent visa but allows for long stays with a family member. Meanwhile, the federal government has specific requirements for visiting Canada with this visa, including the need for private medical insurance.

The government can take a few weeks to process most applications. Processing times will depend on the visa office and if you need to do any extra steps or provide additional information. You can find further details and apply directly on the Canadian official website. The form can be confusing, so pay attention to each step of the application.

But remember that parents and grandparents looking for a shorter stay can apply for a Canada Visitor Visa. This other application process will allow you to stay 180 days Per Entry and is also a Multiple Entry visa. You can use the iVisa platform for a straightforward application, with an expert visa to guide you through the entire process.

Who is eligible for Canada Super Visa?

The main eligibility requirement is to be the parent or grandparent of Canadian citizens or a permanent resident of Canada, no matter your nationality.

How much income do children or grandchildren need to support a Super visa application?

It will depend on the family size and income of the Canadian resident. You must consider the child or grandchild inviting you, their spouse, their dependants, any dependants traveling with you, any other person whom the child or grandchild inviting you are currently sponsoring, and yourself.

According to the latest immigration news, the Canadian citizen or permanent resident must have the following incomes to support the applications of parents and grandparents:

Minimum Necessary Gross Income:

2 people: $33,140

3 people: $40,742

4 people: $49,466

5 people: $56,104

6 people: $63,276

7 people: $70,448

More than 7 people, for each additional person, add: $7,172

Canada’s Government Documents and Requirements for this visa

Parents and grandparents applying for this visa have to provide the following documents:

  • A letter of invitation from your child or grandchild who is a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada that includes a promise to keep the sponsored family members for the duration of your visit, the list and number of people in the household of this person, a copy of this person’s Canadian citizenship or permanent resident document.

  • Proof that your child or grandchild’s household meets the minimum necessary income. It can be a Notice of Assessment (NOA) or T4/T1 for the most recent tax year, employment Insurance, benefit statements, pay stubs, bank statements, or an employment letter including salary, job title, job description, and date of hire.

  • Proof of payment for medical insurance from a Canadian insurance company valid for at least one year from the date of entry, with at least $100,000 emergency coverage.

  • A document confirming that you had an immigration medical exam.

Canada Visitor Visa: Another option to enter Canada

The regular Visitor Visa can be an easier process to travel to Canada since you have fewer requirements and you don’t need to be parents and grandparents to apply. This document allows you to travel to Canada for tourism, business, or to visit friends or family. It is valid for 10 years and you can stay in Canada for up to 6 months per visit.

What is the difference between a visitor visa and a super visa in Canada?

The Parent and Grandparent Super Visa allows visiting family in Canada for longer periods than a Visitor Visa. Parents and grandparents can stay from two to five years with the Super Visa, while the Visitor Visa allows a six-month stay. Both visas permit multiple entries and are valid for ten years.

Currently, most visitors to Canada may visit for up to six months when they first enter Canada. Visitors who wish to stay longer must apply for an extension and pay a new fee. The Visitor Visa Application also can be easier and quicker since you can count on iVisa services to apply with shorter forms and visa experts support.
