Summary
  • From late 2026, Malaysians must apply for ETIAS before traveling to Finland or other Schengen countries.

  • ETIAS is not a visa, but a quick online authorisation valid for 3 years.

  • It’s linked to your passport and allows multiple short trips of up to 90 days per stay.

Planning a trip to Finland? If you're a Malaysian passport holder, there’s a new rule coming soon: ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System).

From mid- to late 2026, Malaysians will need to apply for ETIAS before traveling to Finland or any other Schengen country - even for short vacations.

Do Malaysians need a visa for Finland?

No, Malaysia is one of the countries with visa-free access to the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within any 180-day period.

However, with the launch of ETIAS in 2026, Malaysians will need to register and get approval before departure.

What is ETIAS, and why is it needed?

ETIAS is an electronic authorisation created by the EU to strengthen travel security.

ETIAS is not a visa, but it will be mandatory for all Malaysians entering Europe without a visa. It’s a quick, online pre-screening that helps border officials clear low-risk travelers like you faster and more securely.

Once approved, ETIAS allows you to travel to Finland and 29 other Schengen countries for tourism, business, or transit.

Here’s how ETIAS compares with a visa:

Feature ETIAS Schengen Visa
Required for Malaysians? ✅ Yes (from 2026) ❌ No
Application method Online At embassy
Validity 3 years (or until passport expires) 2, 5, or 10 years
Processing time Minutes to 72 hours Up to 45 business days
Entry type Multiple short stays of up to 90 days Single or multiple, varies, up to 90 days each

ETIAS requirements for Malaysians

To apply, you’ll need:

  • A valid Malaysian passport (with at least 3 months’ validity beyond your departure from the Schengen Area)
  • A credit/debit card
  • A working email address
  • Basic travel details (entry point, dates, etc.)

💡 Femke Strietman, iVisa travel expert:

“ETIAS should be generally fast, but always apply at least a week in advance, especially during the rollout period in 2026.”

How to apply for ETIAS to enter Finland

1️⃣ Go to the official EU ETIAS portal or use iVisa or iVisa's mobile app for a smoother experience.

2️⃣ Fill out your personal, passport, and travel details and pay the application fee.

3️⃣ Wait for your ETIAS confirmation via email – typically within minutes or hours.

Once approved, you don’t need to print anything, as it’s linked to your passport.

ETIAS validity: How long you can stay

Once granted, your ETIAS will:

  • Be valid for 3 years or until your passport expires
  • Allow stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period
  • Cover travel to all 30 Schengen countries, including Finland, France, Italy, and Spain

FAQs for Malaysian travelers about ETIAS

Will I need ETIAS every time I visit?

No. One application is valid for 3 years, unless you get a new passport. In that case, you must reapply with your updated passport number and details.

Can I study or work in Finland with ETIAS?

No. ETIAS only covers short stays. You’ll need a Finnish national visa for work, study, or residence.

Can I still travel in 2025 without one?

Yes. ETIAS becomes mandatory only in late 2026. Check this page regularly for updates to make sure you're prepared.

Need a long-term visa for Finland?

If you're planning to stay longer in Finland, you’ll need to apply for:

  • A student visa
  • A work permit
  • A residence permit for family or personal reasons
