The ETIAS is the name of a system that was created by the European Commission and announced in November 2016. The acronym stands for the name European Travel Information and Authorization System. The Finland ETIAS aims to improve the security protocols of EU member countries inside the Schengen Area by gathering information about travelers that can visit the region without the need for a visa.

Fill me in

The system will only be able to pre-screen travelers who are citizens of non-EU and non-Schengen countries who don’t need a Schengen visa. The evaluation would pertain mainly to security risks like illegal migration and terrorism. This is because some travelers continue to abuse their visa-free status, and also because of unpleasant events that happened in recent years which led to the loss of lives.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the main objective of the ETIAS?

The system is designed to identify visa-exempt travelers from countries outside the EU and Schengen states and determine who poses a security risk before they even begin traveling to the Schengen Area. This is why the Finland ETIAS for citizens of Solomon Islands is important for the safety of all the people who are living in or visiting the region. However, if you don’t need an ETIAS, an eVisa is the best alternative for you.

How long does the application take?

The application form is available online and typically only takes less than 10 minutes to complete. When the completed form is submitted to the central unit, it takes 96 hours at the most to make a decision on whether to approve the application and authorize the applicant to enter the region or not. However, the EC is anticipating the possibility that a portion of the applications may need additional information to make a concrete evaluation and decision. In these cases, the decision may take up to 4 weeks.

What are the reasons why the ETIAS is created?

Like most travel authorizations and documents, the ETIAS will be used by travelers not knowing why it was created in the first place. Here, we outline the reasons why the EC commissioned the ETIAS:

  • Transparency: one of the EU’s goals is to achieve visa liberalization where more countries will be able to enjoy visa-free entry into the region.
  • Border efficiency: the objective is to make it easy for border management personnel to screen travelers when they arrive and depart from the member states.
  • Security: the ETIAS is designed to help boost security protocols that protect against potential crime and terrorism.
  • Immigration: the system is expected to help authorities to identify irregularities in immigration and travelers that abuse their visa-free status.
  • Convenience: reduce application times and wait-times at the border, thereby streamlining the entry process.
  • Funding: applications for the ETIAS will provide more revenue for the Union’s budget, which will, in turn, be used to manage visa-free facilities for visitors that come for business, tourism, or transit purposes.

The ETIAS may be more convenient to use than the visa system. But if you are not allowed to use the ETIAS, you will have to apply for an eVisa to enter the member states.

Is the ETIAS a visa?

No, it is not. There are substantial differences between the two systems. The best thing to compare it to would be the US ESTA.
