Let iVisa.com Help You Enjoy Greece & Schengen Visa Movement

In 2000, Greece entered the Schengen Agreement, allowing for free movement across other European countries (the name "Schengen" comes from the small Luxembourg town of the same name where the original agreement was signed in 1985). Today there are 26 Schengen member states and residents and visa holders of those member states can enjoy free, unfettered movement throughout the included countries. This includes you if you obtain your Greece visa!

If you are a resident of the United States and most European countries, you will not need a tourist visa if you are traveling to Greece and the surrounding areas for a total stay that is under 90 days. However, if you want to extend your visit, or you are a citizen of select countries (largely those within Africa and East Asia), whether that is for work or for a long vacation, you will need to obtain either the short-term Schengen visa or long-term national visa. This is exactly what our team at iVisa.com can assist with. Our team can process your Greek visa application in under 24 hours so long as you provide the right travel document uploads.

The following is a look at that process and what else you should know about enjoying the Greece Schengen travel benefits.

What to Know About the Greece Visa

Some countries will not be required to obtain a Schengen visa in order to visit Greece for any travel purposes under 90 days, but others will need to apply for this visa to do so. In other words, it will depend upon your nationality. Obtaining the Greece Schengen visa is rather straightforward and well worth the process as it will enable you free movement across much of Europe.

The countries that are a part of the entire Schengen Area and thus offer free travel between borders are as follows:

Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

  • FAQ: Are all Schengen countries members of the European Union?

  • Answer: Almost, but not quite. Ireland and Cyprus are full European Union members but are not a part of the Schengen Area at all. Additionally, Bulgaria, Romania, and Croatia are EU members and enjoy some of the Schengen provisions but not all. So just because you are an EU citizen does not mean that you enjoy free travel throughout Greece and the Schengen countries without restrictions.

Every Greek citizen does enjoy all benefits of travel in the above countries.

Who Needs to Apply for the Greece Schengen Visa

Naturally, the big question you have is going to be whether or not you need to apply for the Greece Schengen visa. The three most common questions we get about this are:

  • Do we need this visa for Greece if we are from India? Yes. Citizens of India and many Asian and Eurasian countries will need to apply for this special type of visa.
  • Do Greek citizens need the Schengen visa? No. All Greek citizens enjoy EU and Schengen traveling benefits as part of their citizenship status. If you have been thinking of permanently moving to Europe, then one benefit of choosing Greece and obtaining permanent residency there is to enjoy the automatic Schengen travel membership.
  • Do Australians need a visa for Greece? Australians and the three other commonly cited members of the proposed CANZUK alliance (Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom) do not need to apply for the Schengen visa if they are traveling in and around Greece for 90 days or less.
  • Do non-US citizens living in the US need to apply for a Schengen visa? Even if you or your family has permanent or temporary residence permits enabling you to live in the United States or another country exempt from needing to apply for the Schengen visa, you will need to apply for the Schengen visa if you are a national of one of the below countries required to present the visa. The same holds true for those with a valid alien resident card.

Not a citizen of India, Greece, or Australia? Then, take a look at the below table of the countries. Residents of these countries will need to apply for the Schengen visa:

Residents of These Countries Will Need to Apply for a Schengen Visa

How Long is the Schengen Visa Valid For?

Once you have the Schengen visa, you can enjoy traveling throughout Greece and the other Schengen membership countries for up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

Called the Schengen 90/180 rule, this rule seems complex but is relatively straightforward and designed to prevent abuse of the overall lax travel rules throughout membership areas. The rule limits all visitors (including those visitors from countries that don't need to apply for a visa) to only being within the membership area for 90 out of 180 consecutive days. And once you complete your 90 days, you will not be able to travel to any Schengen membership country until another 90 days (at least) have passed.

So for example, if you enter Greece on January 1st and travel on to Spain and France to enjoy the various cultures and locations, you will need to leave whatever Schengen country you are in on June 30th. Even if you spend your entire 90 days within Greece itself, you will still need to leave on June 30th and won't be able to travel back to any Schengen country until October.

Remember, the Schengen 90/180 rule applies to residents of all countries that are not full members of the Schengen Area -- which is the 26 specific countries listed above. If you had the Schengen visa prior to leaving the country after the 90 days, you will still have to reapply if you want to return after the requisite 90 day wait.

Travel Requirements and Required Documents for the Schengen Visa

In order to apply for your Schengen visa, you will need the following documents:

  • A signed application form, which our team at iVisa.com can help you complete quickly and effectively
  • Two recent passport-style photos for use with official passports
  • A passport from your country of citizenship and a copy of your passport's data page where applicable (Indians, for example, will need this) -- also, note that passport validity will be checked! Your passport must be no older than ten years and must be valid for three months following your anticipated departure from Greece (or other Schengen state)
  • Proof of travel and medical certificate of insurance that offers a minimum coverage value of 30,000 Euros
  • A personal letter outlining your reason for traveling to the area (ie for family member visitation or entertainment) and a complete itinerary
  • Proof of accommodation for your stay
  • Proof you have the finances on hand to support yourself during an extended stay (good examples of this include pay stubs showcasing your monthly or annual salary or a bank account with the funds necessary to support you throughout your stay. A bad example would be credit card statements)
  • You will sometimes be required to show a paid return airline ticket, others can maybe list only their intended date of departure and proof of funds to pay for that departure with an outlined contingency plan

Diplomatic passport holders are still expected to complete this same process.

Will I Need the Greece Schengen Visa if I Am Just Transiting Through Greece?

If you are traveling through Greece or another Schengen Area member state by bus, train, or car, you will need to apply for a visa in its entirety.

If you are flying and will be in a Schengen Area for any length of time -- yes, even if you remain in only one terminal -- you will need what is called a Schengen Airport Transit Visa. The process for this is a bit easier but still requires the completion of a visa application.
