Do I need a COVID-19 vaccine before traveling to Japan?
We know COVID-19 has slowed down tourism in Japan, but luckily the country is again open for travel! Recently, health authorities have lifted strict health protocols.
However, some COVID-19 restrictions still apply:
- Travelers under 18, traveling with fully-vaccinated adults, are exempt from the vaccination requirements.
- Triple vaccinated (double + booster) travelers: do not need to do a PCR test.
- Double vaccinated / non-vaccinated travelers: must still do a PCR test (no more than 72 hours before departure).
Approved vaccines are Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Moderna, Janssen, Covaxin, and Novavax.
Please remember that Japan considers travelers fully vaccinated if they have received all recommended COVID-19 vaccine doses (including the third one). Since information may change quickly, we advise you to follow up on the latest Japan travel updates and/or contact your local embassy.
Must I quarantine upon arrival in Japan?
No, quarantine is not necessary. You're free to explore the country once you arrive.
Do I have to do a pre-arrival PCR test to visit Japan?
It depends on your vaccination status. You do not have to show a negative PCR test if you are fully vaccinated (three doses). If you have only received two doses or are not vaccinated against COVID-19, you must still do a PCR test no more than 72 hours before departure.
Do I need other vaccinations to travel to Japan?
Health authorities recommend having typhoid, diphtheria, and hepatitis vaccinations before your trip. For COVID-19, it’s not necessary to get vaccinated before landing in Japan, but some other restrictions (as mentioned above) may apply.
Always check with your general practitioner or go to the CDC website to find out all travel advice for your trip to Japan.

Dreaming about Japan? Visit Mount Fuji and enjoy the magnificent natural landscape! The peak rises to 3,776 meters above sea level, and you can even see it from Tokyo, located 100 kilometers away.
The mountain is part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park and has been a pilgrimage site for centuries. Nothing compares to seeing the sunrise from the summit. Most climbers start the adventure at the fifth station, from where it will take around six hours to hike up.
The Imperial Palace in Tokyo is another famous landmark in Japan. The 17th-century building is a magnificent testimony of the Japanese Royal family. Check out the East Higashi-Gyoen Garden or go to the Nijubashi Bridge, a romantic spot for couples.
Additionally, you can explore the Ginza shopping district to shop till you drop. At the Kabuki-za Theatre you can see some of the best art performances in the country.
