Malawi is often described as the Warm Heart of Africa, and rightly so. It is an incredibly diverse country, with people descended from many tribes but all extremely welcoming and friendly. The country was formerly a British colony and was previously called Nyasaland. It is a landlocked country in Southern Africa, bordered by Zambia to the northwest, Tanzania to the northeast, and Mozambique on the east, south and west. The main geographic feature of the country is Lake Malawi, which is the third largest on the African continent and takes up roughly a third of the national land area. Malawi is a mostly rural country, with close to 18 million inhabitants nationally, but less than one million in each of its main cities. Its capital, Lilongwe, is also the country’s largest city. It’s former capital, Zomba, is the fourth largest city. Much less well known than its neighbors in Southern Africa, this beautiful country has so much to offer. From varied wildlife, to a unique culture, many opportunities for adventure and to view stunning scenery. In Malawi, the culture is so rich due to the mixing of the various historical tribes, as well as Europeans and Asians. Each of these has contributed to turn modern Malawi into what it presently is, whether it be in dress or dance or language. Although relatively small geographically, Malawi’s landscape is also incredibly varied. It is home to central Africa’s highest peak, an extensive high-altitude plateau that overlooks the lowlands below, a multitude of forests, national reserves and game parks and what can best be described as a gigantic inland sea, Lake Malawi. It is unlike any other lake. Sometimes called The Lake of Stars, due to the first European to visit the place christening it as such, this body of crystal-clear freshwater, circled by golden sand beaches is not only a beautiful place to look at, but also a treasure trove of outdoor activities and resting spot for many of the country’s wildlife. The lake has as many miles from North to South as there are days in the year, which is to say 365 miles long. Due to this curious fact, it is also sometimes called Calendar Lake. It is approximately seven times longer than it is wide, as it is only 52 miles across at its widest point. At its deepest point, the lake is quite fittingly referred to as an inland sea since it goes all the way down to 2300 feet deep on its northern end. As it is such an importance piece of the national landscape, it also makes sense that it would play an important role in Malawi’s economy. The lake provides a rich fish harvest, so fishing villages are scattered all along the shoreline. Visitor are able to easily appreciate the traditional industry and practices. Although there are many villages on the lake, for those willing to go the extra mile there are many long stretches of shoreline yet to be explored. Much of the lake is easily accessible, especially around these villages, but there are other areas where it is necessary to take a detour off the main road. These parts of the lake are usually the prettiest, as they have beautiful, untouched golden sand and glistening crystal-clear water. There are nine National Parks and Wildlife Reserves in Malawi, where the country’s diverse flora and fauna are protected and ready for visitors to come and enjoy. While there are fewer large mammals than in some of its more famous safari-destination neighbors, the opportunity to see them up close, in pristine surroundings and with few other tourists to contend with, is unsurpassable. There is also a big government push to increase the wildlife in the main parks, meaning species that could no longer be seen in said parks have now been reintroduced and are protected, so have once again begun to thrive. There are currently two parks in Malawi that boast having all of the Big Five. Thanks to its rivers and lakes, Malawi offer not just the traditional jeep safari, but also the ever more popular walking safari and even the exclusive boat safari. Malawi is also coming up in the rankings as a popular birdwatching destination. With its varied geography, including highlands, wetlands, etc., there are opportunities to see many different bird species that cannot be found outside of specific ecosystems.
