What is the Malaysia Digital Nomad Visa?

  • Earn an annual income of at least USD 24,000.
  • Be a remote worker, digital freelancer, or independent contractor with an active contract or active employment contract from foreign-based companies or locally-based companies.
  • Work within the IT industry, including digital marketers, UX/UI designers, digital content developers, and/or digital creative content creators.

Successful applicants are permitted to bring their spouse and child(ren) with them under the scheme, for an additional visa fee.

Validity of the Malaysia Digital Nomad Visa

The De Rantau Visa scheme allows qualified digital nomads to live in Malaysia for 1 year Per Entry, with the option of renewing the visa for an additional 12 months. It is a Multiple Entry visa, unlike the Malaysia tourist visa.

Required documents and info to apply for the Malaysia Digital Nomad Visa

In order to apply for a Malaysia Digital Nomad Visa, you will need to prepare the following documents:

  • Copy of your passport: Provide a copy of all the pages of your passport. It should have a minimum of 6 blank pages.
  • Passport photo: If you don’t have one, use the online digital photo service by iVisa.
  • Employment contract: Include your active employment contract showing a current project with a duration of more than 3 months. The company or client may be based in Malaysia or abroad, and there may be multiple contracts for different clients.
  • Proof of annual income: Pay slips stating that you earn more than USD 24,000 USD per year and bank statements of the last three months, and yearly income statement.
  • Recent resume: An updated resume must be submitted.
  • Letter of good conduct: Provide a letter of good conduct from an official authority in your home country.
  • Personal bond form
  • Health insurance: A health insurance certificate that covers medical expenses for you and your dependents in Malaysia.
  • Additional documents for dependents: Such as proof of relationship and/or marriage certificate.

All documents have to be in English or translated into English.

How to apply online for the Malaysia Visa for Digital Nomads

Each dependent on your application will cost an extra government fee of about USD $114.18.

Traveling with minors and children

You can include direct family members such as spouses and children in your application for the Malaysia Digital Nomad Visa, for an additional fee.

Paying taxes as a Digital Nomad in Malaysia

Malaysian digital nomad visa holders do not have to pay taxes on income earned outside the country. Income tax may be applicable to those who work for Malaysian-based companies or clients.
