Frequently Asked Questions
Mayotte is an archipelago between Madagascar and the coast of Mozambique. It is a department of the region of France, although Comoros claims the island as one of the Autonomous Islands of Comoros. That shouldn’t be surprising as the traditional culture of Mayotte is more closely related to that of the Comoros islands.
The Mayotte archipelago is circled by a barrier reef, which is home to a lagoon and a marine reserve, very popular destinations for diving and snorkeling.
Before explaining more precisely what’s unique in Mayotte, we remind you to apply for the Mayotte Health Declaration whenever you feel ready to visit this exotic island. The Mayotte Health Declaration isn’t complicated to obtain with our services, and if you have a laptop, cellphone, or any electronic device with a WiFi connection, you have half of the process done. We’ll also explain a bit more about this process at the end of this article.
Mayotte was ceded to France along with the other islands of the Comoros group in 1843. However, when Comoros voted for independence in the 1970s, Mayotte voted to remain a French "collective". This island voted overwhelmingly (more than 95.2%) to become France's 101st 'department’ effective in 2011. More than 95% of its population is Muslim and many Muslim practices like polygamy, Islamic-inspired law, and male dominance were common, although all of them were modified following French law in 2011.
Mayotte climate is mostly tropical; hot, humid, and with a rainy season during the northeastern monsoon (November to May) followed by a cooler dry season (May to November).
This country is a paradise for divers thanks to its spectacular coral in the world’s largest enclosed lagoon. Here, you can appreciate many protected native species, like the lemur, the drongo, or even the amazing Mayotte sunbird in the hiking trails.
Its wild fauna is quite diverse and surprising. For example, this is the only place (aside from Madagascar) where you can find the maki or ‘ring-tailed lemur’. There’s also the roussette (flying fox), a large bat that flies around both day and night. You can enjoy this rich wildlife by using the 100 km hiking trail that runs around the island. This trail allows tourists to admire the stunning views, discover the incredible geological history, and also get involved in Mahori nature.
One of Mayotte’s highlights is its coral reef, bordering one of the largest enclosed lagoons in the world. The double barrier phenomenon is a mystery of the Mayotte lagoon and a good motive to explore it. Shielded from the ocean's fury, the lagoon is quiet and peaceful, housing a notorious diversity of flora and fauna. Here, you can enjoy a real natural aquarium with colorful fish that live side by side with large sea mammals.
In Mayotte, you can also find one of nature's most beautiful sights: humpback whales teaching their newborns. Besides, you can also watch numerous species of dolphins inside and outside the lagoon. Some of them will allow you to witness their aquatic ballet, while others will share their unique melodies with you. But that’s not all! Mayotte is also an excellent place to observe sea turtles. Here, you can swim with them, or watch them laying their eggs, which is among the more unique experiences possible on the lagoon island.
In Mayotte, many places are worth the visit. Mount Choungi is a good example of that. Climbing Mount Choungui is a must-do in Mayotte during the dry season. The mountain commands the south of the island, ending in a perfect and steep cone that reaches 594 meters (1948.82 feet). This mountain offers a panoramic view of the entire south of the island and its basaltic column is noticeable from Petite Terre.
The islet of Saziley is another must when traveling to Mayotte. This nautical escapade is located in the south of Mayotte, leave by boat from Moutsamoudou—remember to take your mask, fins and snorkel, sunscreen, hat, and many water bottles because there are no shops on this little piece of heaven! Also, remember to take your things carefully and do not leave trash there!
One last place we want to recommend is the Coconi botanic gardens. Strolling this botanical garden during the rainy season is a flourishing treat. In addition to the many flowers and the groves of palm and coconut trees, you can also tour the nursery.
Many things await in Mayotte, so it is time for you to plan your visit to this place. It might not be as famous as other islands like Madagascar, but be sure that it has all the necessary stuff to make your stay pleasant.
