Moldova is the place you must visit if you want to get lost in a former Soviet republic, but you don’t want the typical cliché. Moldova is an Eastern European country wedged between Romania and Ukraine. It was once the world’s least happy place, but nowadays it is the world’s 67th happiest country (how the tables have turned, right?).

This nation has a varied territory that includes forests, rocky hills, and vineyards. It’s home to incredible wine regions like Nistreana, known for red wines, and Codru, with some of the largest wineries in the world. The capital city, Chisinau, has Soviet-style architecture, and here you can find the National Museum of History, which exhibits art and ethnographic collections that display the cultural ties with neighboring Romania.

Moldova is also one of Europe’s least visited countries, which is why it can be exciting if you’re looking for a not-so-crowded place.

We’re ready to give you some interesting details about Moldovan tourism, but first, remember that you cannot enter this country without the proper travel documentation. One of the required documents is the Moldova Health Declaration. The Moldova Health Declaration is an electronic item that authorizes you to enter the country, especially with the current pandemic. To apply for the Moldova Health Declaration, you won’t need many things, only the basics like a passport and an email address. Feel free to continue reading this article to the end to learn more about the application process.

As for tourism, Moldova is the land of unforgettable experiences, and you can enjoy many of them in Chişinău. Most roads in Moldova lead to its wine-and-food capital city, which origins date back to 1420. A big part of Chişinău has been modernized over the years as it suffered some inconveniences in the past, including WWII and a tragic earthquake in 1940. In fact, the Soviets were the leaders in rebuilding the city in what you see today: A Stalinist architecture mixed with modernism from the later Soviet period. Not to mention that nowadays it is possible to observe more advanced sites like 3-floor malls and shopping centers.

Explore the once-musty Army Museum or stroll through Parcul Catedralei! There’s a lot to do in the capital city. For example, you can plan a tour of the National Archaeology & History Museum, which contains artifacts from the region of Orheiul Vechi, or feel free to explore the Nativity of Christ Metropolitan Cathedral, known as the main highlight of the Parcul Catedralei.

Other places you should consider in your visit to Chişinău are the Arc de Triomphe, the National Library, the National Art Museum, and the Grădina Publică Ştefan cel Mare şi Sfînt.

If wine is what caught your attention, then get ready to explore Cricova, one of Europe’s biggest cellars. This underground wine kingdom is located 15km north of Chişinău, and it has an extension of around 120km long. 60km of its date back from the 15th century, meaning that the wine tradition has been here for a long time. Cricova wines and sparkling wines have a high national and international fame. There’s a legend that says that in 1966, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin entered the cellars, re-emerging (with assistance) two days later. By the way, Russian President Vladimir Putin celebrated his 50th birthday here, meaning that yes, the reputation is huge.

No need for wine? Then don’t worry, there are more places to explore in Moldova. One of them is the Orheiul Vechi, an archaeological and ecclesiastical complex located 50km north of Chişinău. This complex is famous for its Cave Monastery, but it also has many ruins ranging from the old days of the Dacian tribes (that’s about 2000 years ago). Can you imagine a ruin that old? That’s something Moldova offers to you.

Something quite interesting about Moldova is the self-declared republic of Transdniestr. This land on the eastern bank of the Dniestr River is one of the weirdest places in Eastern Europe. Why is it so weird? Because it is known as a ministate, but only by its locals as it doesn’t officially exist in anyone’s opinion, at least not as a ministate. From the Moldovian point of view, Transdniestr is still part of its sovereign territory, but that’s not what many people from Transdniestr think. Whatever opinion you prefer, you cannot deny that it’s a historical and iconic place in Moldova once you visit it.

In the northern area, you’ll find the magic city of Soroca, famous for the Soroca Fortress, part of a chain of medieval military bastions built by Moldovian Royalty from the 14th to the 16th centuries. It was built to defend the nation from invaders and dangers. This fortress was founded by Ştefan cel Mare in 1499.

There are still more places to mention in Moldova, but we decided to focus on the main attractions. However, if you’re staying there for more than a week, don’t forget to visit Tipova Cave Monastery and the Bendery Fortress.

In order to visit Moldova hassle-free, you must apply for the Moldova Health Declaration first. We already mentioned this document before, and we said that it was easy to obtain, which is true. However, we also want to give you a brief example of what you should do to obtain it. The first thing you have to do is to confirm if you’re eligible for the Moldova Health Declaration. That shouldn’t be an issue if you use iVisa.com because we have a visa checker that will inform you which documents you need to enter Moldova. Once you confirm if you’re eligible for the Moldova Health Declaration, feel free to start the application process.

Remember that since it is a health declaration, you might need medical insurance and a COVID-19 PCR TEST (at least while the coronavirus is still a danger). You’ll also need a debit/credit card for payment and that’s it!

As soon as you finish applying, you’ll just have to wait for your document to arrive by email. We’ll send it to you as fast as possible (according to the processing option you selected) and then, you’ll be free to print it and hand-sign it to take it to your trip!
