Do I need a passport to visit Puerto Rico?

Puerto Rico is under United States jurisdictions, so the local laws and entry rules are similar to US regulations. This means that US citizens and permanent residents don’t need a passport to enter Puerto Rico.

For international visitors, a valid passport is needed to enter Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico ESTA: Check if you can apply

People who qualify for the US ESTA can also apply for the Puerto Rico ESTA. This is an Electronic Travel Authorization available to certain nationalities that do not need a visa to visit the United States.

The Puerto Rico ESTA is a Multiple Entry document with a validity of 2 years after issued. Local authorities will allow you to enter Puerto Rico and stay in the country for a maximum of 90 days Per Entry with this travel authorization. You can use it to travel for tourism or business purposes.

Puerto Rico Visa: Check if you can apply

Visitors that aren’t eligible for Puerto Rico ESTA, such as US citizens or US permanent residents, must get a visa to enter Puerto Rico. The process to apply for this visa is the same as the US B1/B2 visa.

The REAL ID Act will be in effect as of May 2025. This means that domestic travelers must show a REAL ID-compliant license or another acceptable form of identification to fly within the U.S., including Puerto Rico.
