Chinese visa policy for American citizens

US citizens require a Chinese visa for tourism (L) or business (M). If transiting. However, they may transit up to 240 hours (10 days) visa-free in designated ports, provided they have a confirmed onward ticket. Additionally, US travelers can visit Hainan Province visa-free for up to 30 days for tourism, business, or medical purposes when arriving on eligible routes. All travelers must complete the China Arrival Card online before traveling.

To be eligible for the visa-free visit to Hainan, foreign nationals (including US citizens) must enter Hainan (Haikou or Sanya) via approved international routes, such as direct international flights to:

  • Haikou Meilan Airport (HAK)
  • Sanya Phoenix Airport (SYX) Important restrictions:
  • US citizens must stay within Hainan Province only
  • To be eligible you are generally required to book via registered travel agencies OR be part of organized or approved travel arrangements (policy varies slightly by nationality/program). Check the full rules and how to book via the Chinese government website.

US citizens can apply to extend their stay in China by applying at a local Exit & Entry Administration of the Public Security Bureau (PSB) at least seven days before their current visa expires.

Extensions are at the discretion of local authorities and usually granted for the same duration as the original max. length of stay (e.g., a 30-day stay might be extended by another 30 days).
