Colombia visa requirements for Canadian citizens

Canadian citizens do not currently need a visa to visit Colombia for short stays of up to 90 days for tourism or business.

Canadian travelers need one Colombian entry document:

  • Colombia Check-MIG Form: A mandatory online pre-registration declaration for all travelers entering or exiting the country. It must be submitted at least 72 hours before departure to generate a digital confirmation required for boarding and border clearance.

General Colombia entry requirements for Canadian travelers are:

  • Canadian passport valid for at least six months beyond the intended departure date
  • Entry fee of 270,000 COP (approx. $90 CAD)
  • Confirmed return or onward flight ticket
  • Evidence of sufficient financial funds for the duration of the stay
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel reservation or host address)
  • Other supporting documents, depending on purpose/situation (e.g., business invitation letter)

Colombia visa FAQs

What Canadian travelers commonly ask about Colombia visas

While Canadians don't need a formal tourist visa for stays under 90 days, the Colombian government imposes a mandatory reciprocity fee of COP 270,000 (approx. $90 CAD). This fee matches the processing costs that Canada charges Colombian nationals for visas. It can be paid online beforehand or via credit card at the immigration counters upon arrival.

Yes. If you want to stay longer than the initial 90 days granted at the border, you can apply for a tourist stay extension online through the Migración Colombia portal. This allows you to extend your stay for an additional 90 days, up to a absolute maximum of 180 days per calendar year as a visitor. You should submit the request at least five days before your initial entry stamp expires.

No. The Check-MIG Form is a border control pre-registration document, not a visa. Every traveler—including visa-exempt tourists, dual nationals, and long-term Colombian visa holders—must complete it online within 72 hours before boarding flights to or from Colombia. It's a mandatory security tracking requirement separate from any visa protocols.

The reciprocity fee is waived for Canadian citizens who are under 14 years old or over 79 years old. It also doesn't apply to transit passengers who don't clear immigration, travelers holding a valid pre-arranged Colombian visa, or those flying directly to the archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia, and Santa Catalina. Dual Canadian-Colombian citizens entering on a Colombian passport are also exempt.

Overstaying your allowed 90 or 180 days is an immigration violation. You won't be permitted to clear airport security or board your outward flight until your status is resolved. You'll need to visit a Migración Colombia office, pay a progressive financial fine, and secure a formal Salvoconducto (Safe-Conduct) exit document to leave the country legally.
