Ghana visa requirements

Most international travelers need a Ghana eVisa before they arrive. It is applied for entirely online, approved by the Ghana Immigration Service, and delivered as a PDF by email. No embassy appointment and no passport sticker required. The eVisa is accepted at every port of entry, including Kotoka International Airport in Accra, the country's other international airports, land borders, and seaports.

Citizens of ECOWAS and AES member states travel visa-free, while African Union, Caribbean, and selected Asian nationals are directed to the lower-cost Ghana travel authorization instead of a full visa. Start your application, and iVisa will confirm which Ghana travel document you need based on your nationality and trip, then prepare, review, and file it for you.

General Ghana visa requirements are:

Requirements verified against official government sources

  • A valid passport (valid for at least 6 months from your date of arrival)
  • A scan of your passport biodata page
  • A recent passport-style photograph
  • Your travel dates and intended port of entry
  • Proof of accommodation, a travel itinerary, or an invitation letter for business trips
  • Valid email address

Ghana eVisaeVisa

Travelers who are not visa-exempt must obtain a Ghana eVisa before they arrive. It covers tourism, business meetings, conferences, family visits and short-term professional work.

Who it's for
The Ghana eVisa is for international travelers who still need a visa, including citizens of the US, UK, Canada and the EU. Citizens of ECOWAS and AES member states do not need one, and African Union, Caribbean and selected Asian nationals are routed to their own reduced-cost travel authorization instead.
Permitted activities
Tourism, business meetings, conferences, government visits, family visits and short-term professional services. It does not cover paid employment, long-term work, study programs or permanent residence, which each need separate authorization from the Ghana Immigration Service.
Duration and entries
The eVisa is valid for 90 days from the date it is issued, which is the window you have to enter Ghana, and it allows a stay of up to 90 days. Note that the clock starts at issuance rather than at arrival, so it is worth timing your application to your travel dates.
Where it's valid
The eVisa is accepted at every Ghanaian port of entry: Kotoka International Airport in Accra, the airports at Kumasi, Tamale, Takoradi, Sunyani, Wa and Ho, as well as land borders and seaports.
Minors and groups
Every traveler holds their own eVisa, including infants and children. The government portal has no group flow, so each applicant needs a separate account and payment there; with iVisa you can add several travelers to one application and pay for them together.
Delivery format
Your approved eVisa arrives as a PDF by email. Keep a copy on your phone and print one as a backup, and be ready for a yellow fever vaccination certificate, an onward ticket or proof of funds to be checked when you land, even though the visa application itself does not ask for them.

Ghana visa FAQs

What travelers commonly ask about Ghana visas.

Still have questions?

Our visa experts are available 24/7 on chat, email, and WhatsApp.

Do I need a visa for Ghana?

It depends on your nationality. Citizens of ECOWAS and AES member states travel to Ghana visa-free on a valid passport, with no application and no fee. African Union, Caribbean and selected Asian nationals are offered their own reduced-cost travel authorization rather than a full visa, which iVisa does not currently handle. Everyone else, including citizens of the US, UK, Canada and the EU, needs a Ghana eVisa before arrival.

Do I need a yellow fever vaccination certificate for Ghana?

Yellow fever vaccination is an entry requirement checked at the Ghanaian border, not part of the eVisa application. The Ghana Immigration Service does not ask for the certificate when you apply for the eVisa, but airlines and border officers can ask for it on arrival, so travel with a valid certificate and keep it with your passport.

How long can I stay in Ghana with an eVisa?

The Ghana eVisa allows a stay of up to 90 days per entry. It is valid for 90 days from the date it is issued, and that validity is the period in which you must enter Ghana, not an extension of your stay. Because the validity starts at issuance rather than at arrival, avoid applying far ahead of your trip.

Can I extend my Ghana visa once I am in the country?

Yes. Extensions are handled by the Ghana Immigration Service in person, at its headquarters in Accra, and must be requested before your current visa expires. Extensions are granted at the discretion of immigration officers, may require extra documents, and carry a separate government fee. Overstaying without an approved extension can lead to fines and problems when you leave.

Do children need their own Ghana eVisa?

Yes. Every traveler needs their own passport and their own approved eVisa, including infants and children. On the government portal each applicant needs a separate account and payment. With iVisa you can add several travelers to one application by selecting 'Add another person' and pay for them together.

Is the Ghana eVisa single or multiple entry?

The eVisa iVisa files for you is a single-entry visa, so you need a new one for each trip. The Ghana Immigration Service also issues a multiple-entry visa aimed at frequent business travelers, which carries a higher government fee and is applied for separately.

Do I need a visa to transit through Ghana?

It depends on whether you leave the transit area. Staying airside between connecting flights does not require a visa, but leaving the transit zone does. Ghana issues a transit visa valid for a maximum of 72 hours, and you will need a confirmed onward ticket.

Is there a government fee for the Ghana eVisa?

Yes, and it is separate from the iVisa service fee. Since 25 May 2026, African passport holders who still need a visa pay no government fee at all. Holders of diplomatic and official or service passports are also fee-exempt, but must supply a Note Verbale from an accredited diplomatic mission.
