Laos visa requirements for Thai citizens
Thai citizens do not need a visa to visit Laos for tourism under the ASEAN arrangement between the two countries. That exemption covers the visa only; since 1 September 2025, every foreign traveler, whatever their nationality, must submit the Laos Digital Immigration Form (LDIF) before entering Laos and again before leaving it. Thai travelers will need one Laos entry document:
Laos Digital Immigration Form: A mandatory online arrival and departure registration required for all foreign travelers. It must be completed within 3 days before arrival and departure. It generates a QR code scanned at border checkpoints to streamline immigration clearance. It functions as an arrival/departure card and doesn't replace a visa.

Our visa experts are available 24/7 on chat, email, and WhatsApp.
Do Thai citizens need a visa for Laos?
No. Thai passport holders are completely visa-exempt under the ASEAN bilateral agreement. You can enter Laos without a visa for short stays of up to 30 days for tourism or business meetings, provided your passport is valid for at least six months.
Can Thai citizens travel to Laos using a Border Pass instead of a passport?
Yes. Thai citizens can enter Laos using a Border Pass (หนังสือผ่านแดน) or Temporary Border Pass instead of a passport if visiting adjacent border provinces (such as Vientiane, Savannakhet, or Champasak). Border passes typically allow only a short stay of a few days, and travel is restricted to the designated border region — confirm the current pass rules, including how arrival registration works for pass holders, with the issuing office. Everything on this page, including the LDIF service, assumes you are traveling on a passport.
Is the Lao Digital Immigration Form (LDIF) required for Thai citizens?
Yes. Even though Thai citizens enter visa-free, all foreign nationals traveling on a passport must register online within 3 days before arrival and departure. The form is free and generates a QR code scanned at border control to streamline entry.
How can a Thai citizen extend their tourist stay beyond 30 days?
If you enter on a 30-day visa-exempt status and wish to prolong your holiday, you can apply for an extension at the Department of Immigration in Vientiane or provincial immigration offices before your current stay expires.
What are the penalties if a Thai citizen overstays their allowed time in Laos?
Overstaying your 30-day limit or Border Pass duration is an immigration offense. If you overstay without an approved extension, commonly reported figures are 100,000 Lao kip (roughly $5 USD) to $10 USD per overstayed day, collected at border control on departure, and serious or extended overstays can lead to detention, deportation, or a re-entry ban. Confirm the current rules with Lao immigration if you have overstayed.
