Canadian visa policy for Thai citizens

Thai citizens need a Canada Visitor Visa to travel to Canada for tourism, visiting family or friends, or short business trips. Some Thai passport holders may qualify for an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) instead of a visa, but only when flying to Canada. Eligibility generally requires having held a Canada visitor visa in the past 10 years or currently holding a valid US non-immigrant visa (such as a US B1/B2 visa).

iVisa offers two entry documents for Thai travelers:

  • Canada Visitor Visa (TRV): A mandatory visa for most Thai citizens traveling to Canada for tourism, family visits, or short business trips. It is typically issued as a single-entry or multiple-entry and allows stays of up to 6 months per visit.

  • ArriveCAN / Advance CBSA Declaration: A digital travel and customs form that travelers may be asked of recommended to complete before arrival. It collects key travel details and customs declarations to support smoother entry procedures.

General Canada visa requirements for Thai travelers are:

  • A Thai passport valid for the duration of the stay
  • Photo
  • Biometric data submission (required for Visitor Visa applicants)
  • Confirmed return or onward travel ticket
  • Proof of accommodation and travel itinerary
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for the duration of the stay
  • Supporting documents showing ties to Thailand (employment, family, property, etc.)

FAQs

Yes. Thai citizens need a visitor visa to travel to Canada, including for tourism. However, if they held a Canadian visitor visa (temporary resident visa) in the last 10 years and currently hold a valid US non-immigrant visa, they can apply for the Canadian ETA instead. The eTA is only valid for arriving in Canada by air.

Government visitor visa processing typically takes around 4–8 weeks for Thai citizens, depending on application volume. The eTA is usually processed within 1-2 days.

With an approved eTA visa, Thai citizens can stay in Canada for up to 180 days, depending on the entry conditions.

Yes, all travelers visiting Canada must submit a Canada Advance CBSA Declaration (ArriveCAN) before traveling. You can apply for this declaration entirely online on our platform.
