Canadian visa policy for Nigerian citizens

Nigerian citizens traveling to Canada must obtain a visa before departure. Even with an approved visa, Nigerian travelers may also need to complete ArriveCAN, Canada’s digital travel and customs declaration platform.

iVisa offers two Canada entry documents for Nigerian travelers:

  • Canada Visitor Visa (TRV): A mandatory visa for Nigerian citizens traveling to Canada for short-term stays. Applicants must apply in advance, provide biometrics, and attend a visa process through a Canadian VAC.
  • ArriveCAN: A digital travel declaration that travelers may need to submit before arrival in Canada. It does not replace a visa but may be required for entry processing.

General Canada visa requirements for Nigerian travelers are:

  • Nigerian passport valid for the duration of the stay
  • Biometric submission (fingerprints and photo)
  • Proof of accommodation in Canada
  • Return or onward travel ticket
  • Evidence of sufficient funds
  • Proof of ties to Nigeria (employment, family, or residence)
  • Supporting documents depending on purpose or situation

FAQs

Yes. Nigerian citizens need a visitor visa to travel to Canada for tourism or business.

Government visa processing typically takes 4–10 weeks, depending on the embassy's workload.

With an approved visa, Nigerian citizens can stay in Canada for up to 180 days, depending on the conditions of their entry.

Most Canada visitor visas are processed entirely online, but you will still need to attend an appointment to submit your biometric data. In rare cases, the visa officer may require an interview to obtain more information.

No, Canada does not offer visas on arrival. You must apply for a visa and be approved before you travel.

A Visitor visa does not allow you to work in Canada. If you wish to work or study while you're in the country, you must apply for a suitable work or study visa at a Canadian consulate or embassy in Nigeria.
