Malaysian visa policy for Thai citizens

Thai citizens do not need a traditional visa to visit Malaysia for short stays, as Thailand is an ASEAN member and visa-free entry is generally granted for tourism or short business visits of up to 30 days. Even though a visa is not required, Thai travelers must complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) before arrival.

iVisa offers one entry document for Thai travelers:

  • Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC): A mandatory digital entry form that Thai citizens must submit online before traveling to Malaysia. It collects passport, travel, and accommodation details and helps speed up immigration processing on arrival.

General Malaysian entry requirements for Thai travelers are:

  • A Thailand passport valid for at least six months beyond the intended stay
  • Approved MDAC submission confirmation
  • Confirmed onward or return travel ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter)
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for the duration of the stay (if requested)

FAQs

No. Thai citizens do not need a visa for short tourist visits to Malaysia. However, they still have to complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) before departure.

No visa processing is required for tourism. The Arrival Card is usually issued the same day.

Thai citizens can stay in Malaysia visa-free for up to 30 days.

You should have your passport, your approved Malaysia Digital Arrival Card, and supporting documents like accommodation details and proof of onward travel. Airlines may verify these documents before boarding.

Canadians should submit the MDAC within the allowed pre-arrival window before entering Malaysia (commonly up to a few days before arrival). Submitting earlier within that window is a good idea, so you have time to correct any mistakes if needed.

If you leave it until the last minute, you may risk delays at check-in or on arrival—especially if you have slow internet access while traveling.

Immigration officers may ask simple questions, such as the purpose of your visit, how long you plan to stay, and where you'll be staying. They might also confirm you have a return ticket and that your travel plans match what you submitted in MDAC.

Answer clearly and keep your hotel and flight details easy to access on your phone or printed.

If you plan to actively work while staying in Malaysia, especially for an extended period, you may need a visa/permit that allows it. Malaysia has introduced options for digital nomads/remote workers in some cases, but eligibility and rules vary by program and your situation.

If your trip is short and remote work is incidental, you may not be asked about it—but you should avoid presenting yourself at immigration as “coming to Malaysia to work” while entering as a tourist.
