Luxembourg visa policy

Most foreign nationals who are not visa-exempt must obtain a visa before traveling to Luxembourg for tourism, business, family visits, medical treatment, or short-term study. Citizens of visa-exempt countries, including the United States, can visit Luxembourg for up to 90 days within a 180-day period without a visa. Once implemented, visa-exempt travelers will need to obtain an approved ETIAS before departure.

Luxembourg applies Schengen rules for short stays. Travelers must ensure they hold the correct visa or travel authorization before traveling and meet all entry conditions.

General Luxembourg visa requirements are:

  • Passport valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure and issued within the last 10 years
  • Recent passport-size photo
  • Travel itinerary, including accommodation details
  • Proof of sufficient financial means for the duration of stay
  • Travel medical insurance covering at least €30,000 within the Schengen Area

FAQs

If you are from a visa-required country, you must apply for a Luxembourg Schengen Visa (Type C) for short stays such as tourism, business, or family visits. If you are visa-exempt, you can travel without a visa for short stays, but you will need to apply for ETIAS once it becomes mandatory. Longer stays for work or study require a national visa or residence permit obtained before travel.
The Luxembourg Schengen Visa (Type C) is required for travelers from visa-required countries and involves submitting supporting documents and attending a biometric appointment. ETIAS is a pre-travel authorization for visa-exempt travelers. It is applied for online and does not replace a visa for those who are required to obtain one.
No. Neither a Schengen Visa nor ETIAS allows employment in Luxembourg. If you intend to work, you must apply for the appropriate national visa or residence permit before starting employment.
Yes. A valid Luxembourg-issued Schengen Visa allows travel within the Schengen Area, provided your total stay does not exceed the permitted short-stay limit.
This rule limits short stays within the Schengen Area. You may stay up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period. Immigration authorities calculate this based on your entry and exit dates across the entire Schengen Area.
