Frequently Asked Questions

Yemen which is officially known as the Republic of Yemen is a country situated at the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, bordering Saudi Arabia and Oman in Western Asia. Most countries do need a visa for entering the country, and in case you need one, you will have to acquire it from one of the Yemeni diplomatic missions. The governmental bodies have several countries that have even issued warnings against traveling to the said country because of reasons such as kidnapping, terrorism, and several other types of violent crimes. While war and insurgency are still a present factor today in Yemen; however, tourism is not impossible. Recent improvements in security have made trips possible to Yemen’s central and eastern regions. You will have to arrange your travel through an operator, have them secure a visa for you, and once in, you can visit the country as embassies and consultants currently do not issue tourist visas. Note that the government of Yemen refuses entry and transit facilities to holders of Israeli passports, or holders of passports containing visas valid or expired for Israel or any indication, such as entry or exit stamps, that the holder has visited Israel. There are quite a few places that you can travel to in Yemen.

Start your journey in Yemen by visiting the Al Bakiriyya Mosque which was inaugurated by Governor Hassan Pasha towards the end of the 16th century. It is situated in the country’s capital Sana and the marble ornamentations and the detailed work in the mosque are worth seeing. Next visit Al Mahrah which is situated in the far east of Yemen bordering Oman and Saudi Arabia. Al Ghaydah is Al Mahrah’s main city. It is a relatively unattractive market town two hours from the border. You won’t get much to see here but walking through the market and enjoying the city’s seafood would be a great idea. You can even try and meet the locals to get onto a fishing boat for a few hours to experience a bit of the coastal life at sea in Mahrah. Another fascinating part of Al Mahrah to explore is the Empty Quarter Desert. You can find Mahri camel herders along the southern scrubby fringes of the desert. Unmarked areas of the desert for camel grazing are controlled by each tribe. You will be able to see goat hair Bedouin tents speckling the landscape. You might get to experience traditional desert life by arranging a visit to the desert to stay with some of the local families. It is a real treat for outsiders. To get around in the desert, you will need to arrange for a well-connected guide and solid off-roading car with high tire clearance to get around. There are very few roads in the deserts and even the tire tracks disappear.

Continue into central Yemen and you will reach Wadi Dawan (also spelled Wadi Doan), one of the most marvelous regions open for tourism. The long valley has vast arid table-top mountains and deep narrow fertile valleys. This region is the cultural heart of the Hadhramaut region. The Hadhrami villagers who live here maintain many of their old traditions. The scenery and villages of Wahi Doan are very impressive. You can spend a week here while slowly exploring all the villages. You can meet people and go hiking in the mountains. Visit the Al Hajrain village to see the stunning collection of mud-brick buildings. Visit the Rabat Village. It was the ancestral home of the Bin Laden family so the security here could be a bit strict. Lastly, do not forget to visit the island of Socotra. It has seen a rapid increase in tourism since it re-opened for tourism in December 2018. It is largely regarded as the only safe place to visit in Yemen due to the fact that the Yemen Civil War has never reached the shores of Socotra.

Yemeni cuisine is excellent! Dishes are familiar all around the Middle East such as ful, falafel, lamb, chicken, and goat kebabs. You will get variations of these dishes all around the country. There are specialties which you should try when in Yemen. Try Saltah which is a vegetable stew topped with foamed fenugreek, served piping hot in an earthenware bowl. Also, try Fahsah, which is the same as Saltah but with meat. Try Fassolia which are lightly spiced white beans. Delight yourself by drinking Qishr which is a light, spicy coffee drink made with the husks of coffee beans. We advise you not to drink tap water when in Yemen as bottled water is readily available. Alcohol is forbidden and its legal sale is limited to very few hotels. Bars are available only within the capital’s two or three international hotels. As a foreigner, you are allowed to import up to two liters of alcoholic beverages and can consume these in private. Due to the absence of tourism, Yemenis have yet to develop a souvenir trade beyond the old ‘I love Yemen’ T-shirt. Do not take the trouble of stuffing your suitcase with the narcotic leaves called qat. They leave their kick soon and in many countries, possession attracts stiff penalties. Western nightlife doesn’t have a Yemeni equivalent. On the weekends, some tourist hotels in Sana’s old city had sessions of traditional Yemeni musicians but as tourism has declined so have these performances.

Yemen surely has a lot of amazing places to visit and things to try out but you should remember one key point which is, due to the pandemic the Government of Yemen will require you to present a health declaration form. You must have a printed medical certificate with a negative Coronavirus PCR test result issued at most 72 hours before arrival.
