Who it's for
Tourists from almost every nationality, arriving in Nepal to sightsee, trek or visit friends and family. A short list of nationalities has to arrange an embassy visa instead, and Indian citizens enter under a separate treaty without needing a visa at all.
Permitted activities
Tourism only. That covers sightseeing, trekking and mountaineering outside the restricted areas, and visiting people you know in Nepal. Work and study are not allowed on it, and business travel needs a separate visa issued by the Department of Immigration.
Entry points
Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, plus the staffed immigration offices on the Indian and Chinese land borders. Not every land crossing issues visas on arrival, so confirm your crossing is one of the designated offices before you set out.
Delivery format
Applying ahead gets you a submission receipt with a barcode, which you print and carry to the immigration desk. The receipt is not the visa. An immigration officer places the visa sticker in your passport at the border once your documents check out.
Good to know
Trekking in restricted areas needs its own permits on top of the visa. Extensions are handled in person at the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu or the Immigration Office in Pokhara, and Nepal caps the total time a tourist can spend in the country each visa year.

  • I was asked to pay £50 when I applied for the visa. This was taken from my bank account as shown on my statement. Now on the visa it says that I have to pay on arrival. I do not have a receipt from the visa section, just my bank statement. I need a receipt from Visa section to show the people on arrival that I have already paid.

  • Unclear website. I thought I was buying my Nepal visa but it was just the form that I will need to pay again for on arrival. So I paid over the odds for a piece of paper I could have got when I arrived at the airport. Not impressed.

Nepal visa FAQs

Quick answers to the most common questions about the Nepal Visa on Arrival.

Still have questions?

Our visa experts are available 24/7 on chat, email, and WhatsApp.

Do I need a Nepal visa?

Most nationalities require a tourist visa. You can get this on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport (Kathmandu) or at various land border crossings. To speed up the process, eligible travelers can pre-apply to avoid long queues at the airport. Citizens of Nigeria, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Cameroon, Somalia, Liberia, Ethiopia, Iraq, Iran, Palestine, Afghanistan, and Syria must apply for a visa at their nearest Nepal Embassy prior to travel. Indian nationals are exempt and only need a valid ID (Passport or Voter ID).

How will I receive the Nepal Visa on Arrival?

You will receive a Submission Receipt with a barcode via email. This is not the visa itself, but the digital authorization required to skip the airport kiosks and avoid queues. You must bring a printed copy to the immigration counter in Nepal. However, it's always recommended to keep a digital copy of the confirmation on your phone for peace of mind, which you can also find in your iVisa dashboard if applied through us.

How long can I stay in Nepal with a Visa on Arrival pre-approval?

Tourist visas are issued for 15, 30, or 90 days. It's a multiple-entry visa, meaning you can visit neighboring countries within the max. stay period.

Can I extend my stay in Nepal?

Yes, for a fee. To extend your Nepal visa, you must visit the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu or the Immigration Office in Pokhara in person after first completing an application on the official Nepal Immigration portal. The extension costs a fixed fee for 15 days, with an extra fee for each additional day. Simply submit your online application receipt and passport to the officer and pay the fee in Nepali Rupees (it's best to have cash as card systems are unreliable). You can extend your stay to a total of 150 days per calendar year.

How long does a Nepal Visa on Arrival processing take?

The Nepal Visa on Arrival is usually processed quickly. With iVisa, you can get your Nepal Visa on Arrival the same day (depending on your application and chosen delivery speed). We recommend applying at least a day before your departure date to account for any unexpected government delays.

Do children/minors need a Nepal Visa on Arrival?

Yes, every traveler needs their own visa. However, children under the age of 10 (except US citizens) are usually granted a Gratis (Free) Visa. iVisa makes it easy to apply for the whole family in one go by using the 'Add another person' feature during the application.

How and when do I pay the Nepal Visa on Arrival fee?

When you apply for a Nepal Visa on Arrival using the official government website, you do not pay anything online. Instead, you complete the digital form to receive a barcode receipt, which you must bring to the airport. Once you land at Tribhuvan International Airport, you take that barcode to the dedicated bank counter in the arrivals hall and pay the visa fee in cash, preferably US dollars. After receiving a payment receipt from the bank, you proceed to the immigration desk where the officer verifies your documents and issues the visa sticker. If you choose to use iVisa, the payment process is split into two parts. You pay the iVisa service fee online via credit card or PayPal. You will still need to carry the appropriate amount of cash in US dollars to pay the government visa fee at the airport before heading to the immigration officer.

Can I pay the Nepal visa fee with a credit card?

While some kiosks at the Kathmandu airport now accept cards, 'system outages' are frequent. It is highly recommended to carry the fee in cash (USD is preferred) to avoid delays or pre-apply for approval and pay online ahead of arrival.

Can I get a visa at land borders?

Yes, the Visa on Arrival is available at several land border crossings between Nepal and India (such as Birgunj or Belahiya) and the China-Nepal border (Kodari/Kerung). You can still use our online form to speed up these crossings.

Do I need the Nepal Visa on Arrival to transit in Nepal?

If you have a through-ticket, your bags are checked to your final destination, and you remain in the international transit lounge, you do not need a visa. If you have a long layover and want to go to a hotel or see Kathmandu, or if you need to re-check your bags for a separate flight, you may need a 24-hour Transit Visa, which is cheaper than a full tourist visa. You can obtain this on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM). If your layover is longer than 24 hours, you must apply for a standard 15-day Tourist Visa.

What happens if I overstay my Nepal visa?

Overstaying is a serious offense. You will be charged a fine of approximately 5 USD per day plus a mandatory extension fee. Significant overstays can also lead to detention or being barred from future entry.

iVisa vs. the official Nepal process

Why travelers choose iVisa

On your own

  • The official route sends you to a bank counter inside the arrivals hall after you land, where you pay before you can reach the immigration desk. Nepal now also runs an online payment portal, though search traffic often lands travelers on the older barcode-only form.
  • The government portal is available in Nepali and English only, and Nepal currently runs more than one live portal for the same document, with no single obvious starting point.
  • Nepal's own warning is that details which do not match your passport exactly can cause a rejection, and the fee is not refunded.
  • The Department of Immigration answers by phone and email during Kathmandu office hours on weekdays. There is no live chat, and payment problems are routed to a separate payment provider.
  • We take care of your application online before you fly, so you arrive with your paperwork already done rather than sorting it out in the terminal.
  • One guided form in your own language, with our team checking your answers against your passport before anything is submitted.
  • We review the passport data, the photo and the supporting details before submission, and flag the mismatches that most often cause problems.
  • Round-the-clock human support by chat, WhatsApp, phone and email while your application is with us.
