Indian passport holders no longer need a transit visa to change flights at German airports. This policy change was announced during Chancellor Friedrich Merz's official visit to India on January 12 and 13, 2026.

The rule removes the requirement for a Schengen Airport Transit Visa (Type A) when transiting through German airports to non-Schengen destinations. Previously, Indian travelers needed to apply for this visa even if they never left the airport or passed through immigration.

The change covers five German airports with international transit zones: Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin-Brandenburg, Hamburg (4:30am to 11:30pm only), and Düsseldorf (6am to 9pm only, subject to airline arrangements with airport security).

Why this matters for Indian travelers

Until now, Indian nationals flying through Germany to destinations like the US, UK, or Canada had to obtain a transit visa in advance. The process required documents, photographs, confirmed tickets, travel insurance, and a fee of around €90. Processing could take up to 15 days or longer during busy periods.

The requirement also created risk. Travelers without the correct visa faced denied boarding at departure or were put on return flights upon reaching Germany.

With the transit visa removed, Indian travelers gain access to better flight options through Frankfurt and Munich, two of Europe's busiest hubs. Airlines like Lufthansa and Air India operate extensive routes from these airports to North America, the UK, Africa, and Latin America.

Conditions for visa-free transit

The new rule comes with specific requirements:

  • Travelers must remain in the international transit zone
  • The layover must be under 24 hours
  • The onward flight must be to a non-Schengen destination
  • Travelers cannot exit the airport, collect checked baggage, or pass through immigration

Flights to Schengen destinations such as Paris, Rome, or Amsterdam still require a full Schengen visa.

It’s important to note that while the rule has been announced, implementation has not yet begun. Travelers should confirm current requirements with their airline before booking.

What Indian travelers should do

If you are flying through Germany to a non-Schengen destination, check whether your connecting airport has an international transit zone and verify the operating hours. Confirm with your airline that you meet all transit conditions.

For travel to Schengen countries or layovers that require leaving the transit zone, you will still need a Schengen visa.
