Summary
  • All visa-exempt visitors, excluding British and Irish citizens, need an ETA, including EU members
  • Issues with the UK Government app? Use iVisa’s streamlined service to improve your chances of approval
  • The UK ETA is linked to your passport and is an electronic document

The UK Government launched a major expansion of its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system. By April 2025, nearly all international visitors to the United Kingdom needed an ETA before travel. We’re here to tell you everything you need to know about the UK ETA and how it will affect your travel plans.

Do I need a UK ETA if I’m just flying in and out of the UK?

Generally, yes. But there's currently a temporary exemption for passengers who transit airside and, therefore, do not pass through UK border control.

This move will primarily affect Heathrow and Manchester airports, as the only UK airports that currently offer transit facilities. The exemption will be kept under review.

What is the UK ETA?

The UK ETA is a digital travel permit similar to the US ESTA or Canadian eTA. It allows eligible travelers to enter the United Kingdom for short stays without a visa. It’s a crucial step towards modernizing border control and ensuring a hassle-free travel experience.

Who needs it?

By April 2025, all visitors who don't need a visa will require an ETA to travel to the UK. This includes tourists, business travelers, and transit passengers. The rollout is happening in phases:

November 15, 2023: Qatar

February 22, 2024: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates

January 8, 2025: 49 countries, including USA, Canada, Australia, Japan

April 2, 2025: All European Union countries

British and Irish citizens won't need an ETA.

If you’re wondering whether you’ll need an ETA, simply consider whether you usually require a visa for short stays in the UK. If not, the ETA will likely apply to you.

How to apply

You'll be able to apply for your UK ETA through the official UK government website or mobile app.

However, at iVisa, we offer a streamlined ETA application service to simplify the process and improve your chances of approval. You can apply through our website or the iVisa app.

Once your UK ETA is approved, it will be electronically linked to your passport.

Processing time

The UK government aims to process most ETA applications within 3 working days. This could take longer if additional checks are required.

If you need your ETA processed quickly, consider iVisa's expedited processing options. We're here to make the process as efficient and painless as possible.

Benefits of the Electronic Travel Authorisation system

The ETA benefits both travelers and UK border control by providing:

  1. Streamlined entry process for eligible travelers

  2. Reduced waiting times at UK border control

  3. Digital link to the traveler's passport, eliminating the need for additional documents

  4. Enhanced border security

Common reasons for ETA rejection

Your ETA could be refused if:

  • You provide incorrect or false information

  • You have previous immigration violations or overstays

  • You have a criminal history

  • There are security concerns

If your ETA is refused, you may need to apply for a standard visitor visa instead.

Tips for a successful application

To increase your chances of approval:

  1. Apply well in advance of your planned travel date

  2. Double-check all information for accuracy

  3. Be honest about your travel history and any criminal records

  4. Ensure your passport is valid for the duration of your stay

Can I work or study with a UK ETA?

The ETA permits stays for tourism, visiting friends or family, short-term business, and short-term study. It does not replace visas required for long-term work or study.

What happens if my ETA is denied?

If your application is denied, you will need to apply for a standard UK visa. The reasons for denial will be communicated, and you can reapply after addressing the issues.

How can I modify my details?

Can I apply for a UK ETA if I already have a valid visa?

Can I enter the UK through Ireland with an ETA?

The UK ETA is not valid for entry through Ireland. Different rules apply to the Common Travel Area.

Can I transit through the UK with a UK ETA?

Yes, a UK ETA allows you to transit through the UK, even if you don't pass through border control. However, you'll still need to obtain an ETA before your trip

What if my travel plans change after I get my ETA?

Your ETA is valid for multiple entries over two years, so you can use it for future trips within that period.

Can I use my UK ETA for multiple trips?

Yes, a UK ETA is valid for multiple entries over a 2-year period or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.

What if my passport is lost or stolen after I get my UK ETA?
