Who it's for
Travelers who need an authorization to enter Benin for tourism, business, or a family or social visit. Citizens of African countries are exempt and travel to Benin without a visa, so this document does not apply to them.
Permitted activities
Tourism, business, and family or social visits. The government issues one general eVisa rather than separate student, medical, or business categories, so every eligible purpose uses the same application.
How you travel
The eVisa is accepted at air, land, and sea borders. There is no separate procedure or document for arriving overland, and the government publishes no different requirements by entry mode.
Delivery format
An electronic authorization tied to your passport number and sent to you by email. Nothing is stamped in your passport before you travel, and border officers check the electronic record on arrival.
Good to know
Every traveler needs their own eVisa, minors included, and the tier you pick cannot be changed once the eVisa is issued. Your validity starts on the entry date you declare in the application, so a delayed trip uses up part of it.
Validity
Valid for 30 days

What happens if my Benin eVisa application is denied?

Denials are rare and usually stem from typos or invalid passports. iVisa experts check your details against your passport bio-page to minimize these risks. If denied, you must usually start a new application. iVisa also offers optional denial protection.

Can I get a visa on arrival without an eVisa?

No. Benin has replaced its visa-on-arrival system with the eVisa portal. Airlines may deny boarding if you do not have a printed eVisa clearance before your flight.

Can I extend my Benin eVisa?

Yes, but an extension cannot be done online. You must visit the Immigration Office (Direction de l'Émigration et de l'Immigration) in Cotonou to request an extension before your current visa expires.

Do I need the Benin eVisa when I'm transiting?

If you are arriving at Cotonou Cadjehoun Airport (COO) and your connecting flight is within 24 hours, you generally do not need an eVisa or transit visa as long as: You stay within the international transit area of the airport. You do not clear immigration or collect luggage that requires re-checking. Your onward flight is confirmed and you have the necessary documents for your final destination.

Why travelers choose iVisa

On your own

  • The official form is written in legal register, and the portal's binding text is French only.
  • The eVisa cannot be modified or refunded once it is issued, so a typo means starting over.
  • A contact form, plus a chat widget that is usually shown offline.
  • A guided, plain-language form in your own language, with each question explained as you go.
  • We check your details against your passport before anything is submitted to the government.
  • Real people on chat, phone, and email while your application is with us.
