Yes, for most travelers. Only citizens of India (who require a permit), Bangladesh, and the Maldives are eligible for a visa on arrival, but must still pay a reduced fee for the Sustainable Development Fee. All other international tourists must obtain an eVisa/visa clearance before traveling to Bhutan. Bhutan's visa system remains focused on sustainability and consists of two parts:

• Sustainable Development Fee (SDF): Most adults must pay $100 USD per night (a 50% reduced rate valid until August 2027)
• Visa fee: A one-time, non-refundable visa payment is required for all applications

You will receive a Visa Clearance Letter as a PDF via email. You must print a physical copy of this letter. When you arrive at Paro Airport or a land border, immigration officers will check this letter and your passport before placing the actual visa stamp in your passport.

The Bhutan eVisa is valid for a maximum of 90 days. However, the duration of your stay in Bhutan is generally determined by the number of nights you have paid the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) for, which is part of your application. It’s therefore important to plan your itinerary beforehand.

Yes. If you wish to stay longer, you must apply for a visa extension at the Department of Immigration in Thimphu. You will be required to pay the daily SDF for every additional night you remain in the country, plus an extension fee.

Yes. Every traveler, including infants and children, must have their own individual eVisa. However, Bhutan offers significant discounts on the SDF for children:

• Under 6 years old: Exempt from the nightly SDF.

Yes. The Bhutan eVisa/clearance is accepted at major land border crossings, most notably Phuentsholing (on the border with India). You must ensure your visa clearance letter is ready for inspection by border authorities.
