Italy visa requirements for US citizens

US citizens do not currently need a visa to visit Italy for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism or business. However, once ETIAS starts operating and its transitional period ends, US travelers will need to obtain an ETIAS authorization before entering Italy or any other Schengen Area country. ETIAS has no confirmed start date: the EU withdrew its last-quarter-of-2026 target in July 2026 and has said it will give several months' notice. Once it starts, a transitional period of at least six months follows, in which travelers without one can still enter if they meet the other entry conditions. A grace period of at least six months follows, during which a traveler's first entry after the transition can still be made without one.

ETIAS for Italy: A mandatory online travel authorization for visa-exempt travelers visiting the Schengen Area. Once implemented, it will allow US citizens to enter Italy for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism, business, or transit. It will be valid for 3 years or until the traveler’s passport expires.

  • Found iVisa in a search for local passport photo sources; wasn't even looking for an online service. Turned out that iVisa was considerably easier than going to one of my local passport photo locations, like CVS or Walgreens. I will definitely use iVisa should I need this service again.

  • I found iVisa after wasting money getting pictures taken at a drugstore that were awful and then ended up being rejected at the consulate, causing me so much stress because I was forced to do the whole application process over again. IVisa was the complete opposite experience. I got to take the pictures myself, making sure the lighting was good and taking as many shots as needed until I got enough good ones to choose the best from. IVisa is cheaper than having a store take the picture and the quality was so much better. Its easy to use and they know the requirements for different countries which was helpful. Then you can get it mailed to you so you never have to leave the house, but I opted for same day pick up from a local drugstore because I wanted to make sure I had them in time. I will be using iVisa from now on and would recommend it to anyone wanting to make sure their visa or passport pictures turn out great.

  • Fairly easy to use, but what sadistic SOB designed the way to input a date? Do you know how long it takes to scroll backwards through dates before you reach my birthdate? Much longer than the "3 minutes" it's supposed to take to fill out the entire form. LET US ENTER A DATE AND NOT USE THE CALENDAR OPTION!

  • Process was pretty easy. When I travel, I will see if using iVisa was worth it. I decided to use iVisa to ease the issues of traveling outside the Country during the Covid pandemic.

  • First time I have used ivisa.com. Waiting for documents. I’m not sure how to send a copy of my passport? I know I’m early, but I just want to do everything correctly so there’s no problems. So far so good. Thank you!

  • The best. Everything was easy and the pricing is very affordable. We did travel docs for 3 different countries and also registered with embassy. Love the fact that everything shows up in our iVisa dashboard which helps to keep everything organized. Thank you Vincent & Debi

  • Total rip off. It’s just the EU digital locater. They make it seem like it’s something different, but you can fill out this form for free just by booking a flight. The airline gives you a link to go to where you can fill out the form at no cost and upload the pdf file with QR code to your airline before flying.

  • Very simple, fast and reliable. Only way to get photos for a passport of a country different from the one you live in.

Still have questions?

Our visa experts are available 24/7 on chat, email, and WhatsApp.

Do US citizens need a visa for Italy?

No, US citizens do not need a visa to visit Italy for tourism or business stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. However, once ETIAS starts operating and its transitional period ends, US travelers will need to obtain an ETIAS travel authorization before entering Italy or any other Schengen Area country.

What is the processing time for ETIAS for Italy for US citizens?

The ETIAS system has not launched yet, so official processing times have not been confirmed. Most applications are expected to be processed quickly once the system becomes operational. With iVisa, you can apply for the ETIAS for Italy online and receive expert guidance throughout the process.

How long can US citizens stay in Italy?

US citizens can stay in Italy and the wider Schengen Area for up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism, business, or transit without a visa. Once ETIAS becomes mandatory, travelers will still be able to stay for up to 90 days within a 180-day period under the same conditions.

Do US citizens need a visa or ETIAS when transiting through Italy?

US passport holders generally do not need a visa for airport transit in Italy if they remain in the international transit area and do not pass through immigration. If you need to leave the airport or enter the Schengen Area during transit, you must meet the standard entry requirements, such as having an ETIAS (once required).

Do US citizens need a new ETIAS for each country in the Schengen Zone?

No, the ETIAS you use to enter Italy is valid for all 30 countries under the ETIAS scheme. You don’t need to apply for a new one for every country you visit.

Can US citizens extend their stay in Italy?

Short stays cannot normally be extended, but exceptional cases exist (medical, force majeure).
