Visa types needed for Liechtenstein

  • Liechtenstein Schengen Visa (Type C)
  • ETIAS for Liechtenstein*
  • Liechtenstein Airport Transit Visa (Type A)*

Liechtenstein Schengen Visa (Type C)

Purpose: The Liechtenstein Schengen Visa (Type C) allows travelers to visit Liechtenstein and other Schengen Area countries for short stays for tourism, business meetings, family visits, medical treatment, or short-term study.

When to apply: It’s recommended to apply at least 3 to 4 weeks before your planned travel date.

Processing time: Processing times vary depending on nationality and consulate workload. Most applications are processed within 15 calendar days, but in some cases it can take up to 45 days.

Duration and extensions: The visa allows stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Extensions are granted only in exceptional circumstances.

Entries: The visa may be issued as a single-entry, double-entry, or multiple-entry visa, depending on your travel plans and the decision of the consulate.

Delivery format: This is a physical visa sticker placed in your passport. You must attend an appointment and submit your passport and biometric data.

ETIAS for Liechtenstein*

The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is a mandatory travel authorization for visa-exempt nationals visiting Liechtenstein for tourism, business, transit, or medical purposes for stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Once approved, it is generally valid for up to 3 years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.

Liechtenstein Airport Transit Visa (Type A)*

The Schengen Airport Transit Visa (Type A) may be required for certain nationalities transiting through the international transit area of a Schengen airport on the way to a non-Schengen destination. Since Liechtenstein does not have an airport, this applies only if your journey includes an airport transit in the Schengen Area and the visa is issued by the Schengen country where you transit.

Liechtenstein visa policy

Most foreign nationals who are not visa-exempt must obtain a visa before traveling to Liechtenstein for tourism, business, family visits, medical treatment, or short-term study. Citizens of countries with visa-free access, including the United States, can visit Liechtenstein for up to 90 days within a 180-day period without a visa. Once implemented, visa-exempt travelers will need to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization before departure.

Liechtenstein applies Schengen rules for short stays and border control is managed in coordination with Switzerland. Travelers must ensure they meet all entry conditions before departure, including holding the correct visa or travel authorization where required.

General Liechtenstein visa requirements are:

  • Passport valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure and issued within the last 10 years
  • Recent passport-size photo
  • Travel itinerary, including proof of accommodation
  • Proof of sufficient financial means for the duration of stay
  • Travel medical insurance covering at least €30,000 within the Schengen Area

FAQs

Short trips, such as tourism, business meetings, family visits, or transit, require a Schengen Visa (Type C). If your trip involves studying, working, or moving to Liechtenstein long-term, you will need a national visa (Type D) or a residence permit. Each visa has different application requirements, processing times, and supporting documents, so it’s important to select the right one based on your purpose of stay.
Yes. Travelers from visa-exempt countries (for example, the US, UK, Canada, and Australia) will need ETIAS starting in 2026. ETIAS is not a visa; it’s an online pre-travel authorization that confirms your eligibility to enter the Schengen Area, including Liechtenstein. It is valid for multiple short trips over several years and allows stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Applying online is quick, and most approvals are instant.
No. Schengen Visas are strictly for short-term travel, such as tourism, business meetings, family visits, or transit. If you want to work, study, or start a business in Liechtenstein, you must apply for a national visa (Type D) or the appropriate residence permit. These applications require additional documentation, including work contracts, educational enrollment, or proof of financial means.
Yes. A valid Schengen Visa issued by Liechtenstein allows travel to all other Schengen countries, provided your total stay in the area does not exceed 90 days within a 180-day period. This makes it easy to combine Liechtenstein with visits to neighboring countries like Switzerland, Austria, or Germany without applying for multiple visas.
After you submit your application, our legal partner reviews every detail to ensure it is accurate and complete. This includes checking your passport scan, photos, accommodation details, and supporting documents. Once everything passes the review, we submit your application to the authorities. After approval, you receive an email with the official visa or instructions to collect it, so you can travel confidently.
The “90/180 rule” means your total days in the Schengen Area cannot exceed 90 within any rolling 180-day period. The 180 days are counted backward from each day you are in the area, so every day you spend there affects your remaining allowance. Leaving the Schengen Area does not reset the count. For example:
  • Enter on January 1, stay 30 days → 30 used, 60 remaining
  • Return on March 1, stay 40 days → total used in last 180 days is 70, 20 remaining Careful tracking ensures you do not exceed the limit and risk fines or entry refusal.
A Schengen Visa (Type C) is an official entry permit required for travelers from visa-required countries. It allows short stays up to 90 days and must be obtained before travel. ETIAS, on the other hand, is an online travel authorization for citizens of visa-exempt countries. It confirms eligibility to enter Liechtenstein and the Schengen Area for short trips but does not allow employment, long-term residence, or study. ETIAS is faster and simpler to get, but it does not replace a Schengen Visa for travelers who need one.
